round went off in magazine 1911

Wow, glad you live to tell. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like double charge, powder still burning on recoil. Things would have been way worse if round went off in mag.

I have a case that is almost identical to the op's out of my ruger. blew the mag guts out of the bottom. was loaded with 700x so no dbl charge. a fellow looked over the case and said is was called a 'balloon head', ment for black powder. the headc stamp is 'peters'. looking threw the hole at the base of the brass it 'balloons' up into the case as opposed to being dished. probably picked it up at the range by accident. only damage to my gun was the left grip logo button blew off found it and still fits with a little peening never found the mag parts

Holy fark! Glad you still got your hand/fingers. Something like that happens to me, I might develop a flinch after. Humm, maybe I'll start wearing gloves at the range so if I get a KB, it'll be easier to find my missing bits of fingers to reattach. Ouch.

Ah just a flesh wound Jdman! That'll buff right out. Seriously, glad you got your hand and fingers still.

Now we see why they say don't put your hand under the grip of a pistol when shooting...

Because that's where the pressure goes when there is a problem in the chamber.

Here's what the FN looks like after the Kaboom

Not exactly as friendly as the SR1911

Jesus..!!!!

Glad you're OK - your pistol did exactly what a 1911 is supposed to do in a catastrophic failure, channel the blast down and away from your face. Good designs protect the shooter - as far as the pic of the 5-7 goes, I'm advised that the design is totally safe, but that is a true OOB detonation, so I'll pass on the high pressure, modern designs.

I'm also getting my first reloading set up this week as well. I've ordered the Hornady Lock-N-Load Progressive Press. I'm going to start off with loading .45ACP. I've watched numerous videos, read a lot, and I especially pay attention to incidents like this so I can learn from other peoples' mistakes and accidents.

Thanks to the OP and all who have responded for this excellent learning material and information.

:sok2 I`m getting my first reloading set up this week......I think I`m gonna read my reloading books a few more times lol

Glad you are ok, that is the main thing. Now I really know for sure why I like my revolvers more then my auto's. I would say for sure that your gun fired when the round was not fully chambered and that is why the case blew like it did. Probably as simple as the case was not quite sized properly.

Does anyone have experience / know of any cases where the shooter had Kevlar gloves on during a kaboom, and if it made a difference in the amount of damage their hands took?

I would definitely start wearing these (even though I hate wearing gloves while shooting) if it significantly reduced the amount of danger to the hand.

Interesting question.

I'd like to know as well.
