Definitely - some people have received a fair bit of info on Swiss Arms / CZ requests - http://open.canada.ca/en/search/ati?f[0]=ss_ati_organization_en:Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Other requests are pretty entertaining and someone out there has a lot of reading to do

Was it ever confirmed the drum/belt is not prohibited, at least by themselves?

Themselves who?

The law...

is of the “belt” type consisting of a fabric or metal belt, is not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for the purpose of feeding cartridges into a automatic firearm of a type that was in existence before 1945.

Rpd belts are metal...
Are not reproductions if military surplus...
And was designed and manufactured for feeding cartridges into an automatic firearm that existed before 1945. (The RPD-44, aka of 1944)

There is no drum magazine. The drum is just a box to hold the belt. It has no features of a feeding device. The belt just sits in it.

I have a feeling this is taking so long because it will be the most affordable, non-restricted, full belt allowable rifle and uses one of the most affordable centre fire cartridges out there!!!

Affordable, but not highly attainable. Dsa, the largest producer of the semi auto rpd, is shutting down production after this year. Supply of parts kits for the US market is drying up. Production won't meet demand and the price won't be affordable for long.

Only reprieve we might have is China for parts kits. But then we would need someone to make receivers, which would require a new frt for the new manufacture.

Maybe. Not necessarily. There are no other semi auto rpd receivers yet classified and the arms east import is the first. It may speed up future types.

Or like in the case of the m17 line, maybe not.
There is 2 different manufactures in the query waiting to get assigned FRT. Are they both Arms East?

Arms East was working with DSA and a second manufacture yet to be publicly named. Dsa dropped out of their commitment to provideo dsa rpd models to arms east. Another importer was looking at bringing in the rpd. Not sure if they followed through.

But they do have our money regardless. And so we wait......
