Hi all,

Just bought a little Ruger 10/22 with a Walnut stock

and a ProMag AA556R stock

They are on the way and I was thinking about what kind of optics I want to put on it. If I left it as with the walnut stock I would just put a scope on it but I'd like to put a Red Dot sight on with the AA556R for a couple of reasons. First its just going to be a gopher gun so I don't expect to be shooting at anything further then about 50 yards away and second I have always suspected that in short range applications the red dot would be a better tool for the job allowing a better field of vision. I realize I won't have the precision with a red dot as I would with a scope but at close range I believe you can aim quickly and switch from one target to the next easier as well as making it easier to track the next one once you pull the trigger if there are a bunch standing close together.

I was wondering what you guys thought? Also if you have any recommendations. I don't need anything fancy again its just a simple little gopher shooter.

Thanks in advance

I second a scope. I have a wonderful trs-25
It does its job well. However having a 3-9x scope helps just that much more when those gophers are hiding.

if you were using it for plinking red dots are great. nice fast target acquisition and you dont have to mess around with being perfectly lined up with the optic. for gophers at any range i would +1 the scope. something simple like a 3-9 or even a bit more will serve you better. at the 3x magnification you still have a rather large field of view but you have the ability to zoom in to make sure the first shot is clean.

I went the expensive (but well worth it) Trijicon RMR (American Defense mount) route for my 10/22. No batteries, small and quick. I also don't expect to shoot it much past 50m with accuracy.

I've got 4 10/22's, 2 of them are custom jobs put together by yours truly, 1 SR-22, and a stock, 20" barreled rifle.
I have 3 of them scoped, 1 with a Vortex Strikefire. I had the Strikefire on the SR-22 but just replaced it with a Bushnell AR-22 (2-7x32) scope. The Strikefire just went onto the stock rifle for plinking at spinners and whatnot. The Wife uses the stock rifle for her enjoyment.
I'm really liking the AR-22 scope, turn the magnification down to 2x for close-range shooting, and crank it up to max for shooting longer distances. The dots in the reticle are set for 75, 100, and 125 yards at max magnification (using a 50-yard zero distance).

THe info in the ad is incorrect, the scope has side parallax adjustment. I paid $180 at Wholesale Sports for the scope

I've used them both ,many different names... Both has it's benefits . I'm now thinking the only suitable optic for a semi auto is either a 1x6x24 or a 6x fixed power with a RDS piggy backed.

My dad has a scope on his 10/22, I have a red dot.

A red dot is not a tacticool kids thing. They both have their different uses. We just target shoot and play around. If you're gopher ahooting, use a scope. I find the red dot far more enjoyable then the scope for plinking. We plink at 50-70 yards. He's been shooting his whole life. He's always had a scope or iron aights. He absolutely loves the red dot sight on my 10/22. He wants the same red dot for Father's Day.

Red dot isn't a fad. It's a very practical optic.

I'll add another vote for the Bushnell AR 2-7x. I love mine. Very impressed with the features and the glass compared to other rim fire scopes. I like the side focus down to 10 yards. Very usefull on a .22. Also note it is very solid and beefy. Others I looked at felt like toys compared with the Bushnell.
