So I went out and dropped 425 taxes in on a little 10/22 takedown. I have heard so many good things about this gun, so i decided i would get one. Bought mine yesterday. It's my first semi auto 22, Im used to flawlessly reliable bolt 22's, and also used to different brands of ammo grouping differently.

Took it out to the local shooting pit and passed about 200-250 rounds through it. Cci blazers, federal bulk 36gr hollow point, american eagle 40gr solid lead, federal solid lead 38gr, and about 25 winchester super x 37 grain jhp. The rifle suffered repeated and continuous FTE's, and stovepipes. The only thing it ran smooth and shot well with, was the win super x. I only shot about 25 rounds of it though, so it might have been a fluke.

To say that i am dissapointed is an understatement. These things are supposed to be superb. Im going to try a few things, like loosing the barrel adjustment nut, (on tight just tight enough so that the gun wouldn't rattle, 1 click looser and it rattled), and Im going to try passing more winchester ammo through it. I will update as i go. Any advice would be much appreciated.:bangHead:

It might just need to be broken in a bit, maybe things will settle down after you put another 250 rounds through it. Maybe ask the shop you bought it from and see what they say. When I got my Remington 597 new in 2001 it was really fussy then I found the correct ammo that caused no problems. Now I go back and can shoot anything through it without FTE's and stovepipes. I found the set of springs I ordered from Remington to see if that was the problem, never did put them in as all it seemed to need was a break in.

Some guns just plain don't like certain types of ammo.

Pick up a brick of the Winchester rounds it liked and go back to the pit. See what happens.

If yo have no (or at least fewer) FTE stick with that brand.

Man, i hope it's just an ammo issue. I have played around with bolt guns, an i'm used to some brands grouping like crap in certain guns, but constant failures? Heeeell no.

Same thing that my 10/22 did. Wasn't an ammo issue, and it wasn't dirty, I was told to put an ejector in it and see what happens.

Mine did the same thing when new . After about 400 rounds it cleared up . I've shot several thousand from it now with very , very few problems .

I can fix your gun in an instant... just shoot Winny Super-X.
If this is your first semi-auto, then it can be frustrating to find that it doesn't work as it should... but it will. You have already started the first cure, and that is to find the right ammo. Try CCI SV's and Federal 711B. The next step is to wear it in some... shoot, shoot, shoot... Spray your action with a good bore solvent after every range session during break-in, you may get excessive wear and filings... use a very light graphite lube and cycle the action by hand many times before starting shooting again... clean the chamber also (barrels not so important)... use only Rug magazines until you get it running well... the gun will shoot well for you, give it a little time... its the nature of the "rimfire semi auto beast" (often).

how's the condition of your chamber? can you manually insert and remove the round with just your fingers? if not you might need to get the chamber polished? my 10/22 had a particularly rough chamber when i bought it. removed the barrel used an extremely fine grit polishing agent on a drill press and a fibre bit. since its fired 1000's of rounds without a FTE or stovepipe.
