Ruger 1022 vs Blazer ammo, KABOOM!

The issue with Blazers is the bullet coating. Look at it closely; it looks more like a lacquer than a lube. If you want cheap, stick with Federal Champion or American Eagle...

i use both brands, my kimber .22 1911 eats anything, but my stock 10/22 seems to prefer american eagle. best reliability even with aftermarket mags.

the dlask barrels have a tight match chamber and a lot of brands of ammo won't chamber fully without a good solid whack by the bolt and then you can't extract a loaded round ( actually pulled a bullet out of the case trying to extract it ) cci seem to be the worst ones. Great for accuracy, not so great for practicallity.

WoW! I only ever use blazers, never even had a dud yet. So this problem is only specific to the dlask barrels?

^^
I've gone through a couple bricks of blazer in my SR w/ no issues. Just a couple fte but I think it's cause one of my BC 25 round mags is afu.

so is this only specific to dlask barrels?

I have used thousands upon thousands of Blazer in my 10/22 Target Tactical without a hitch, and I honestly don't think I have ever had a misfire. I have also done the same in my former Sig Mosquito with the same results. They do seem to dirty the barrel with the coating crap on them, but this is strange to me.

Might have to stick to the Win High Velocity Super X.

Ah who am I kidding I love the Blazer, it shoots very well.

Yikes! I just bought 1500rnds of those same blazers last night
I've been finding I get the odd FTE using american eagles (1 per 50)
The federal 525's feed and eject just great
Thought I'd buy some blazers for the pile.. for the past few months I've been buying roughly 3x the amount of ammo that I actually shoot, this way I continue to add stock as the prices are constantly increasing.
Based on this, I'll probably stick to federals

Me too, about a thousand rounds now, same rifle. So far it's been fine, and more reliable than the cheaper remington stuff I've tried, with the exception of a couple squibs. And I've got about 2,000 more waiting for me in-box.

Are people mostly seeing this type of failure in the tighter Dlask barrels, or have any of you seen it happen with the factory Ruger bits?

I did a check and simply put the Dlask barrel has a tighter chamber. I'll snap some pics of different ammo in a ruger factory barrel and the Dlask barrel to show the difference.

It's important to state that I'm still very happy with my Dlask set up, it is made to very tight specs, the cheap Canadian tire ammo is not... IMHO ;)

So the problem with the Blazers is specific to the dlask barrel - all the psosts seem specific to the dlask barrel - would everybody agree with that assumption?

Well I know that now! I've also been told to stay away from stingers. Any other ammo flavors I should be avoiding? I have about a dozen different types at home right now. I really like the Remington yellow Jackets, they made an amazingly tight group but damn were they loud compared to everything else!

I just bought my 10/22 last week and yesterday I went out with the ammo I had on hand. Yellow Jackets were VERY loud, shot tight groups and the POI was about 2" higher than the Winchester HP's at 25 yards.

:agree:

I would think so. I have also fired 1000's of Blazers through numerous semi-rifle/handguns with 0 problems.

Seems like match chambers or tight aftermarket barrels seem to be the cause.

If you put a match grade barrel on something... wouldn't you tend to fire match grade ammo to get the best results?

I've never had any problems with the Blazers, and I hope that I don't, because I still have over 4000 of them still stashed away, and I don't intend on getting rid of them.

Blow -ups

I had the same issue as OP last year. I don't know about all bbls but the 12" Dlask has a short lead not compatable with Blasers and may be some others. They where designed this way for optimum accuracy with cheap ammo [ bulk packs] As I wanted my rifle to shoot all ammo, even if not optimum, the throat was opened slightly so Blasers would work.
I have a 3x Burris ar332 scope on my rifle and it will put ten Eley sports into one hole at 25. Ten Blasers will shoot to 4" at 100m with only normal Ruger reliability. I'm happy :)

I decided to compare how well different brands of ammo fit into my Dlask barrel vs a factory Ruger barrel.

I found that all of the ammo I tried fit into the factory barrel just fine.

The Dlask barrel was a whole different story. The blazers would get stuck 1/2 way in! A number of other brands had trouble fitting as well. In fact I found the only ammo that seemed to fit absolutely flush was the Super X's. The Yellow Jackets were close as well.

Any who here's the pics:

Dr Lector told me that Blazers were actually larger than a regular .22 Case. And as per your picture, he was right. And I have to agree with "trigger'06". Dlask barrels must be made to shoot the cheaper ammo accurately. I've had some nice groupings in the 25-50 range, but the opened up some at 75-100. But the nice thing, even at a 75yd shot at a rabbit or gopher. If you miss the first, the next shot is right behind it :D

Edit:

Good job Ruger, now you designed your guns to kill the operators!!!

Edit again:

Moral of the story: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!

I disagree. The mag blew out but the receiver didn't rupture at all. I'm very happy about that! Also note that a factory Ruger would more than likely not have had this issue.

Moral of the story: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!

Ya! I am a big fan of this mantra after my little incident!

DJ_Squelch - thanks for putting that pictorial together!

Redbone - ?? the problem is the dlask barrels, not the factory rugers - what posts are you reading??

Odd... I just finished putting 1050 through my ruger pistol and had no problems. Incidentally my pistol really likes the stuff, pretty decently accurate.
