Ruger American Ranch - 5.56 AR

I'm looking to get back into the long gun game again (I sold my rifle to pay against one of my last divorce bills). What's this rifle worth approx.? I had a .308 before, but I want to possibly find something cheaper to feed. I know that's a tough one in long guns... or just say to H with it, blow my whole wad and get a 6.5 creedmore.... not sure yet. I was a 308 guy before through and through because I was trying to emulate the USMC M40 series of rifles. I pretty well had an M40a3 minus a different piece of glass...later on throwing it into an MDT chassis....and still cry sometimes when I come across pictures of my old rig.

I googled that for you and it looks like Tenda has it on sale for $699 right now, which seems like a decent price IMO.

The Mossberg MVP is very similar looking. It even has the backup iron sights. I've heard its got issues compared to the Ruger, though.

MDT makes a chassis specifically for the Ruger American that uses AR mags, it was the reason for making the purchase in the first place as I have tons of AR mags. I use my 10rd LAR mags.

$500 CDN. Is that the going price for these chassis? That’s also without a pistol grip, buffer tube and buttstock. I’m used to paying through the nose for firearm related items but that seems ever so slightly outrageous.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. You could cannibalize one of your AR15s for these parts though to minimize costs. Can't go out and shoot those AR15s for now anyway. It's still a very steep price for a chassis, I agree.

Any less expensive alternatives that you know of? I don’t have a donor rifle for the parts I’d need so if I want to swap the OEM stock over I think I need to look elsewhere.

I have one of these ranch rifles as well. I bought it for my son to use in Ganderites Sporting Rifle shoots. Pleasantly surprised at accuracy although only shot at 50yds to date. A thrown together load of 748 under Hornady 55gr fmj are all in one hole. Hoping to try at 100 this weekend. I need to adjust the trigger but it’s not terrible. My only complaint is the mags don’t lock in very solid. They kind of wobble around in there. No feeding issues so I guess all good but I wish Ruger had of put a bit of a magwell on there. It’s a separate piece anyway.

irunguns is bringing in another chassis for the RA Ranch. I suspect it will be at least $500 also, but may not need anything else other than a pistol grip. I like the factory stock, but it does flex a bit, and I really need another inch of LOP, so I suspect a chassis of some sort is in my future. I like the MDT ones, particularly as you can configure them into a folder. Works out to $900 plus tax and shipping though.

Thanks, I’ll look for the IRG option. I'm not willing to pay that kind of cash for a chassis and parts for what was a cheap rifle.

Thank you for the original post - Excellent info.

I myself was, of course, in the same situation. Lots of AR mags, invested in some 5.56mm ammunition, now few options.

So what I did, I purchased an SKS.

Mag doesn't fit. Wrong caliber. Makes no sense whatsoever. But I tell you there is something beautiful about that SKS...!

Now I'm looking for something in .308. Same scenario. Thought about one of the AR-10 magazine compatible scout rifles... Seem hard to find.

Which now probably means I'm going to buy an SVT.

Makes no sense whatsoever

I’m doing some looking at chassis setups also. MDT is toward the inexpensive end with a lot of adjustability. Thing is, most of those cheap plastic stocks really aren’t worth much and don’t work great either, especially if you are taller or shorter than average.

If you get the MDT chassis do you lose the ability to use a wide range of AR mags? Did I read that only certain kinds work?

I've opened the bolt several times with my left hand, while my right hand was still holding the grip. I've shaved many layers of skin off my thumb doing that.

try to operate the bolt with the right hand and pulling the trigger with the left hand, not only you will avoid your wounds but you will shoot faster than any others ...

I'm a lefty too but right from the start I trained myself to shoot right handed, that was more than 50 years ago for me. Fortunately, my dominant eye is my right eye. There just aren't enough left handed firearms available to suit my needs. After a relatively short time when I started shooting, it became quite natural to me to shoot right handed.

As for the Ruger American Ranch rifle, I've found that to shoot fast, I operate the bolt and pull the trigger with my middle finger without letting go of the bolt knob. That way I can cycle the action immediately after pulling the trigger. As mentioned in my original post, I plan to use this rifle in CQB matches where fast follow up shots are a requirement. The Ruger AR rifle fortunately has an excellent trigger/bolt knob geometry to make this work well.

i ve been trained to shoot RH with the army tools but for my own i prefer lh firearms and shotguns except the 870 or bps.

Limited testing with this rifle and different ammunition seems to suggest that for me it prefers cheap 55g Prvi Partisan .223 over slightly pricier American Eagle 62g .223 or Xtac 5.56 green tip. Not complaining if that’s the case but is that what others are finding?
