Ruger American Rifle Gen II

Are you referring to the gen1 ruger American? I have a gen1 ranch model in 308 that I love. But I’m tired of the bolt handle catching branches loosing a round of ammo every time I pass through some thick bush or brush. Won’t have this issue with the gen2. I’d be happy with an gen2 18” 308 model. I agree the stock is fugly like others have said. Looks a bit better without the cheek riser. But as long as the ergos are ok I’ll rock one.

Yes, the Ruger American Compact be a 1st gen unit. Perhaps the gen 2 action w/3 position safety will cross over to most of the American line in the near future.
Looks like Ruger be heading this way to me.

I agree the bolt lock 3 position safety is an improvement, and as long as the stock fits ok and shoots well the look is not that big of a deal.

I do see Ruger coming out with some new stock options down the road though and also offering a non spiral fluted option.

Maybe straight flutes or just a plain barrel.

I handled one of these today. Not bad. Plastic but not plastic-ee. Would have walked out with it if they had a 223. 308 and 6.5 CM only. 900$

Maybe some day you'll happen to see a 223 on sale when the time is right. They'll be had for less soon, I'm sure.

My last gen 1 purchase were in the $680s range even now that they're $800+ in most places.

Just saw on the ruger site they have released a model number for the gen2 American ranch in 308 Winchester. I’m super pumped and can’t wait to get my hands on one. If anyone knows of anywhere I can pre order one please let me know.

So explain to me this "adjustable" comb - it's just some badly designed 1/8 thick plastic cover that goes on? The gun looks WAY better with it off.

A 16" barrel ranch in 308 (with flush mag) gets my attention more then the regular version. That's the only "option" that would make me get rid of my Ver 1, which I got my first bear and deer with.

Pretty much the 3d printed units that people buy and put on their stocks, but included with the rifle yeah.

If the 20" barrel of the Gen 2s were put on the Gen Is that'd be awesome. May have to mix and match...cheaper than rebarreling otherwise

I love my gen1 308 ranch. Super light and handy. My only complaint has been the bolt not locking shut while safety is on. I’ve lost quite a few rounds walking through the rhubarb.

Just bought a 5.56 Ranch Gen II this morning from Prophet River, first 5.56 I've seen in the country.
I'll report back later in the week once I've put a few rounds through it...or not.

Here's a guy over on a US forum who recently bought a Ruger with a missing extractor! :p

Extraction is an upgrade you gotta pay extra for lol

For those of you with rifles in hand, how do you like them compared to the Gen 1s? Are they actually an upgrade over the Gen 1 worth paying any extra for?

My 5.56 Gen II showed up yesterday.
I usually take a new firearm home first and inspect it,clean it etc. but in this case I made an exception and drove straight from the post office to the range.
Fired around 60 rounds of a variety different loads and she looks to be a shooter.
So smooth right of the box, feeds slick as snot on a doorknob.

I then brought it home and spent the whole evening into the wee hours doing a complete teardown, trigger job etc. as well as parts swapping from my original RAR's.
I plan on doing a complete pictorial in the near future detailing the changes and compatability with earlier Gen etc but no time at the moment.
In the meantime I had this rifle completely apart and can answer any questions anyone might have.

I can say with all honesty I don't know how Ruger managed so many upgrades both mechanically and aesthetically for 200$. Ugly as she is I am smitten so far. Everything a rifleman could ever ask for in a sub 1000$ general-purpose rifle.
The fact that it uses a stone reliable magazine system with quality mags readily available anywhere for 35$ is merely icing on the cake.
