Ruger American vs Savage Axis - Thoughts??

Ruger American. I have one and it shoots well above it's class.

Barring that, as others have stated, Weatherby series 2 is an excellent rifle.

Remington 783!

Sorry, I know that doesn't help. Axis, American, and the 783 are all kinda the same IMO. I really like the Weatherby suggestion, I have a Vanguard and its a nice solid gun and a real sweet shooter, but it's also fairly heavy.

I have a axis in. 243 and love the way it shoots. My only complaint is the flimsy, ugly stock, but I am planning on ordering a Boyds stock for it very soon.I was just waiting to see how the fit was before ordering, and so far everything I have read on the computer everyone who has ordered one seems to like them.

Order now!!! They are awesome stocks. Toss in some custom options as well while you are at it. If its under $500 your good to go.

I don't understand the reasoning behind buying a cheap entry level rifle only to spend a lot of cash doing upgrades to it.

Save your money and shoot it as is or take the amount you would have spent on the rifle and upgrades and buy a nicer rifle. In the end you'll have a gun that will be worth more & be happier with. There's some great deals on the EE this time of year as hunting season winds down and Christmas bills pile up.

The thing is an Axis will come on sale for around the 300.00 mark (wholesale sports right now) with a scope mounted ready to shoot. Then for another 100.00 you can add a nice Boyds laminate stock, so for around the 400-450 mark you end up with a very good shooting rifle with a nice good looking stock.....whats not to like about that?

Toss another $400 for a mid range scope and your pushing a g-note.
Been a fairly steady supply of nice aged, s'perianced gals on the
EE for that or less.

Yung whipper snappers..........can't teach'm chit.

You can't count the price of upgrading the scope on a new rifle any less or more than doing the same on a used one!
and LOL....I certainly ain't a yung whipper snapper!
Most mid ranged (price wise) guns on EE are the same price as new from a dealer so I don't see any benifit on going that way. And to save 150 dollars by buying used on a 800 dollar gun, well, I'd sooner pay 150 more and get a NEW rifle with warranty and not some one elses screw up.

i agree a gun with a non adjustable trigger not for me. and then change the stock? nonsense. a 783 if you like a heavier rifle i havent used the ruger or the marlin x7 but i think they are a better idea than the axis

I don't own either an Axis or a Ruger American but I'd bet that if I used either one exclusively for hunting next year, I'd not be at any disadvantage in filling my tags. Isn't that what a rifle is suppose to do?
As far a wanting to swap out a stock, well, that's just one of the fun things you can to do with the axis for a mere 100 bucks. Lets see... an Accurate, stainless steel, laminate stocked rifle for 450-500 bucks....hmmmmm, gotta like that! :)

? I've seen some very good deals on here.. used doesne mean destroyed. Some realllyy nice gear on there for decent prices, and if you add patience you can find a wicked deal, that's where I will do most of my shopping from now on.

have owned and used both

Savage Axis - so FUGLY (and I love Savages)
Very nice mag (same center feed as Savage)
Decent trigger out of the box with minor tweaks. Aftermarket possible for nice pull
Can be TLC to function very smoothly
Nice mag lock up - very quiet and I don't mind the plastic floorplate - not so cold as steel
good recoil pad but looks silly
Good stock fit for me albeit a bit long when I put on all my winter stuff - I chopped the stock
Bedding is decent and easily improved.
Accuracy, as good as other factory Savage rifles with the option to add match barrels
Do not like the overly long action and attempt at one size fits all.
Grip area is very slim which is ok with gloves but petite otherwise - typically flexy so needs to be opened up a lot
Finish is surprisingly good and is durable.

I beat on one last season and it held up superbly. for the money, it is a very good value but why or why design it so FUGLY.

Ruger American

Love the light weight and balance
Trigger is very nice and easily adjusted - no aftermarket needed
Bolt lift is 60deg which I really like and smooths up superbly with use. Very Tikka in looks and handling... I like
The det mag doesn't look like much but works very well - one of the smoothest feeding hunting rifles I have ever used.
Ejection is positive.
Bolt handle is a nice shape and length
Accuracy for my 30-06 was sub MOA, no more no less

The appearance of the RA is worlds better and I truly like the lines vs most other commercial hunting rifles at any price point. It cycles smoothly and I love the lower bolt lift. Not heavy either

If I was on a limited budget but didn't want to do anything more then bed, open the forend and have a nice looking rifle I would be proud to show off, the American is my go to.

It has the option of barrel swaps and might just do one in the future.

If you had no money at all, Savage Axis

If you had a few more dollars and don't want to carry your rifle around in a paper bag, Ruger American.
