Look at the barrel wall thickness. On a .38 or .45 the walls are a LOT thinner than a .22. So a lot of the muzzle heavy feel goes away quickly as the bore size gets bigger.
For esthetics I really like the 7.5's. For easier holster drawing and poking around barriers or through openings I like the short barrels. So I tend to compromise at the 5.5's
