Ruger Hawkeye

To be honest, The Whelen has yet to fire a round.... and the .223 Scout has very few miles on it either.... I was just going by my impression in regards to how thick the coating is and how hard it is to the touch.... I also have 4 Rugers with the all weather coating and don't find that to be durable at all.... most of them have their share of scratches and scuffs from hard use, I plan on putting the barreled actions through the blasting cabinet when they deteriorate to the point that it actually bothers me.....

Yes, if I had a complaint about the Hawkeye, the finish would be it. As far as the blasting cabinet goes, good idea, but as long as there's no rust, the wear just gives it character ;)

The All-weather stainless finish scuffs and scratches very easily, but it doesn't seem to affect the resistance to rust.

Ya, if you run your fingers over the scratched or scuffed area you can't feel any difference in texture.... It seems as if the scratches only wear off some of the coating, still not taking it down to the metal....

I wonder what if what is underneath personally, if it is plain metal or actual stainless.....

In late 2014 I found a RH laminate/stainless 23" 375 at Prophet River and picked it up, as that particular one felt "rare-ish" to me.

Other configurations seemed available then but I did notice during that search that the availability felt less abundant than what I expected.

A quick look at Prophet River shows a similar selection to what I saw back then. Hopefully that's the trend but fingers crossed.

I had one of those too, but foolishly sold it after Moose season last year. Nice piece! The longer barrel got all the velocity out of that sledgehammer round. Mine was accurate, too!

Is it not bead blasted stainless on the whole rifle?

It is bead blasted stainless, however some models (if not all, I hear mixed reviews) come coated in the Ruger "target grey" coating...... My .308 scout and my 7-08 all weather as well as my guide gun have this coating on them......

I can tell you (especially in the case of the scout that has been well hunted), that the coating really isn't that durable.... The matte black that is in my .223 scout and .35 will hopefully hold up better.....

At the end of the day, I don't own the aforementioned guns as showpieces.... They are for tough hunts, or boot around camp on the back of the 4 wheeler....... So, as wapiti mentioned, character marks are cool.......

I was pondering the question of durability a little bit more and I wonder if it is not so much the coating isn't durable as it is the Ruger receivers have so many corners on them. I don't think it matters what coating you have on an edge or corner, it will wear faster than a flat surface or cylindrical surface. The barrel on my .375 is still in fine shape, it just shows wear around the front sight, rear sight ramp etc., all places with edges and corners.:confused:

this is true WapWaka , there is a lot of lines on the Rugers , I carry with hand around the 'bolt port' most of the time , therefore they get shiney pretty quick

No... it is the barrels that get easily marked up and scuffed with the Hawkeye matte finish... and they are cyclical(ish) like everyone else's... as I said earlier, it doesn't compromise the rust resistance... just looks bad to my eye... which is why I prefer the bluing or bright stainless of the MKII series... I should note that not all Hawkeye rifles have the matte finish... some do have proper bluing... and I have seen some of the Lipsey's rifles that are Hawkeye models and have bright stainless.

I concur with this...... My scout has many miles on it and a few scuffs here and there.... All on the barrel.... Nothing on the receiver or anywhere else......

Also, it's my spot and stalk / dogging rifle for deer and is never carried slung for the most part...... And show no wear on the carry points and receiver...... Only the barrel......

The nice thing is knowing that it's truly stainless underneath the coating (not bare metal)..... So, when I can't put up with the scuffs anymore, into the blast cabinet she goes......
