The Ruger M77 Alaskan has been catching my eye lately. Just something about the look of that rifle I really like. Now my local shop has one used in .416 Ruger. The caliber is completely overkill for anything I would ever shoot but i think I am ok with that. What are your opinions on the rifle and caliber? Should I do it. I have a couple Ruger M77's and am very happy with them. Anyone have an Alaskan? How hard is that caliber to find ammo for. I reload so that will help keep the cost down a bit but will I be able to find components for it? What do you guys think i should do. Run out and grab it or find something different to spend my cash on?

The 416 might have substantial recoil and that could very well be why its on the used rack.
I have no experience with the 416, but I do have a 375 Alaskan and I like it now that the few kinks it came with have been cleaned up.
Have you done a search on google to see what other comments are out there ?
As for reloading components, sourcing brass and bullets should be no problem.
If you should decide not to go for it, could you PM me the store location as I would be interested...

I've owned both the 375 and 416 Alaskan. Sold both. Wish I had kept the 375. The 416 was too much recoil for me. But that's me. The 375 seems to be my limit. I like the 375 Ruger quite a bit. Bought an African and restocked it with a grey laminate. With my handload recipe, I was able to get 170 FPS more from the 23" barrel on the African over the 20" on the Alaskan. Excellent trajectory and down range energy with the 260 grain Accubonds. Going to work up a load with 250 grain TTSX next. Trajectory is a little flatter than my 180 grain 30-06 @ 2700 FPS. Similar energy at 300m that a 180 grain .300 Win Mag has at the muzzle. Quite possibly the most versatile cartridge out there.
Brass for the 375 can be ordered from a number of sources and handloading is obviously the way to go.
Factory ammo for both is riduculously expensive...

I like my Alaskan, had a weak moment for a day and put it for sale, but then came to my senses. Great all around caliber for any big game and its a quick handling rifle. Here's a picture of mine. McMillan stock, VX-R 2-7 Warne QWR. I shoot 250gr Barnes TTSX over H4350

When i was handling the rifle I found it shouldered very nice and the sights on it were great. I am just trying to put a few more $$$ together and then i am going to make the final decision about the purchase. i have been wavering between that and a few others.

Love my 375 Alaskan. Got rid of the POS Hogue stock, replaced it with a $69.99 factory synthetic from Brownells - much better now.

I drool over my .375 daily. It is the handiest rifle I own, swings like a good goose gun, and tell me of an animal that it can't flatten. My new go-to gun for just about everything bigger than rabbits.

I still wish Ruger would chamber it in 338win. They did with the African but I want the shorter barrel and stainless steel of the Alaskan.
