Ruger-Made Marlin Lever-Action 1895 SBL Rifle: First Look

This review seems positive.

Yeah, but don't they all?

I appreciated the detailed explanation of how the new gun differs from the old, in both manufacturing methods and detailing. I guess the intent is to emphasize the lengths to which Ruger is going to return the Marlin name to a place of respectability. But...a receiver overpolished so as to alter metal contours? That's the sort of thing you look for to determine if a used gun has been butchered by a bubba. And the writer hopes that the Marlin/Ruger workers will eventually "figure out" how to polish metal?

Add to that an improved trigger. It's been so thoroughly improved that it takes 6.5 pounds of force to operate. Hmmm.

Like the gun shown in the original post of this thread, the rifle being reviewed might be an early production gun that doesn't live up to the standards that we can expect of standard production rifles down the road...or it might be the best sample they could cherry-pick for the purposes of the review, but still turned out to be a bit of a dog.

No way to know for sure. Ruger is in a tough spot here; like every builder introducing a new or improved gun, they must decide between waiting to get the review gun just right at risk of not getting word out and creating excitement as early as they would like...or rushing a gun into a magazine writer's hands despite the fact that it is a little rough around the edges, and thus might colour the public's perception before the guns are even in the pipeline.

So, again...just gotta wait and see.

After reading this and seeing the pics, my first thought was that the used price of "jm" stamped Marlins is going up even higher.

Buying anything in person, if you don't like what you see, you can always walk away.
IMO, Marlins, of any make, are best inspected, handled and bought in person.

Things I'm interested in:
-wondering if the 'new' Ruger screws & hardware are going to be compatible with the JM & Remington made rifles. One screw specifically is the rear band screw for the 336's.
-looking forward to seeing & handling the 1894 models, in 357 & 44Mag
-would like to see something under .275, something like a 336 in 25-35Win. :)

JM's weren't any better, I have a 444 with a canted left of center barrel and seen many others with issues with JM stamped. If anyone will figure it out Ruger will..

To me that review read more like a "sales pitch".

Like he didn't dare say anything negative. And the "old school" two positives before a negative Psychology 101...hmmm.

"I mentioned that the trigger is consistent and crisp—which it is—but the trigger on mine breaks at 6 pounds 7 ounces, which is a bit heavier than I would prefer."

Yes a Marlin 45-70 Gov't would be nice, like others...gonna wait for an unbiased review.

I dont expect Ruger will improve the trigger at all. I am a Ruger fan, I have owned probably 50 different Rugers, from rimfires to boomers. Not once have I had a Ruger in which I said "wow, nice trigger". I like them in spite of the triggers because they usually have many other attributes I love.

Are the 1895s up to now of "questionable" quality? Or is it an issue of nitpicking fine details? I wanna get into hunting soon and Im considering one of these. Do I care if its a Ruger? They're hard enough to find as is - I doubt the Ruger built one would land in my lap this year.

It just needs to shoot straight.

It seems to me a lot of comments are expecting poor quality but are hoping for better ? Is this because of the hiccups that Remington had when they first took over Marlin? I personally think Ruger will get it right right off the start. On another note I’ve been watching the used marlin prices with interest and I’ve noticed a trend of the prices starting to drop. Saw a nice SBL listed for 1500 today on #######. There are still a few guys thinking theirs is still worth 2400$ However lol

How far back in time must one go to find thd SBL retailing for around $900? Back to the beginning?

Pffttt... take the money.

Money isn't everything,I think I bought the jm sbl maybe 2011, not sure how long it was in stock though.I bought it from a green diamond tractor supply store that got into selling hunting gear .I remember the next ones they got were over $1000 and people thought it was nuts then lol.I wouldn't pay anywhere near what some people will pay for certain guns,I'm not a collector ,all of my guns get used or moved.

I have a remlin Sbl that has much better fit and finish than the jm model, even the stainless is finished with a cleaner look than the Jm model.Accuracy is about the same ,no complaints from any of them .
