I read somewere that the Ruger 22/45 is'nt as reliable as the Ruger Mark3 because of the different angle of the grip causes the magazine to feed the ammunition differently, therefore making the 22/45 not as reliable Mark 3. I was wondering if there is any truth to this?

I have been approved by my wife to get myself a new .22lr pistol for my christmas gift, and I have pretty much decided to get a Ruger pistol, just because I have heard that they are the most reliable .22lr on the market. I also prefer the looks of the 22/45 over the Mark 3, but if the 22/45 is'nt as reliable as the Mark 3, then I would pick the Mark 3 because I would like to have the most reliable one of the two.

However, if there is no truth to the 22/45 being less reliable than the Mark 3, then I will get myself a Ruger 22/45 Stainless.

So, I'm hopeful that there are some guys on CGN that own both models, and could give me some comments here.

My 22/45 feeds Federal 525 pack ammo flawlessly for 500+ rounds before getting gunked up enough to occasionally misfeed in cold weather. The grip angle means little to the mag angle, look at a 22/45 and you will see that the mags sit diagonally across the grip frame and feed at pretty much the same angle as the Mk.III.

I also had a Mk.II that ran the same as the 22/45, no issues for hundreds of rounds between cleanings. I don't think that there is any functional difference between the various models.

I would say that you should handle both models and get the one that fits your hands better. They feel very different and you will likely have a strong preference for one or the other.

both are top guns and there are no diff on feeding
I prefer all stainless MK III with 5" bull bbl, but that's just a personal choice
I have a very good experience with all Ruger in 22LR caliber, 100% recommended!

I guess I will have to head to the gun shop and see if I can handle both. I have shot a MK III at the range, that someone offered to me for a test run. I really like the way that it felt in my hand. I better see if I like the 22/45 feel then, because if I really like way the MK III feel, it sounds like that I may not like the 22/45 as much.

Well its good to know that there is no difference in the durability or feeding from one to the other, and its really just a personal preference on how they feel in your hand.

I owned a 22/45 4.5"bbl slab side. It never had feed issues but had some FTE's that a VQ extractor resolved. The only negative (for me) was the thin grip which I could not get used to.
I just picked up a MK3 5.5" bull bbl and after 500+ rounds have had zero FTE's, FTF's, or load issues using bulk ammo. I like the weight and balance of this one but have ordered a Hogue grip because I find the front strap slippery. I also added a Bushnell red dot to help my tired eyes.
You can't go wrong with either but get the one that fits you best.

I've got a Mk lll 22/45 with the bull barrel that eats lead and s**ts brass without a problem. As for the thin grips, I'm ordering a set of overlay grip panels that will bring the grip thickness closer to that of a 1911.

I kind of like the idea of thin grips becuase I take my 12 year old daughter, and 13 year old son to the range often, and my daughter really likes to shoot .22lr in anything because of the light recoil (shes only about 60-70lbs). Maybe the thin grips will be a little bit small in my hands, but I don't mind because they should fit her little hands better.

Exactly why I purchased the 22/45 at the time. My son is now pushing 15 and his hands have grown. We both find the larger grip and heavier feel of the MK3 bull bbl better to our liking.

However....(((Echo))), I like the idea of the overlay grip panels for the 22/45. Should solve the "thin grip" issue I have with them.
Where does one find them...actually, don't tell me 'cause I don't need another reason to buy another HG;)

I have a 22/45 and it works very well with Federal Bulk Pack.
However, (for better or worse) I am partial to the old Walmart Dynapoints and I have a bit of a stash that I'm working through with my 10/22. They are plenty accurate for the activities I participate in and work very well. They simply won't work in the 22/45. Probably half won't feed or extract properly. I haven't taken the time to trouble shoot this as I just use the different ammo and tailor it to the firearm.

22/45 rp here with full size Ed Brown grips, otherwise stock. About 1200 rounds so far, Blazer 525 bulk (CCI). 1 stovepipe at about 250. Otherwise flawless. I changed the grip panels to get a 1911 feeling. I found the stock thin panels too thin.

+1 on a source for the overlay grips, the thin grip is the one thing I don't like much on my 22/45. If I could duplicate the grip feel of my 1911 I would be extremely happy about that.

+2......

Tell me more about these overlay grips. I have a MkIII 22/45 with the 4.5" slabside barrel. I'd like thicker grips though....

NAA.

Getting back to the magazine angle issue, or more accurately the NON issue, if you look at the magazines for the 22/45 you'll find that they are the regular Mark II or III magazine with a funky long baseplate on it. The magazine itself feeds the cartridges at the same angles from the same style of magazine as the other Rugers.

I've held the base model 22/45 that has the molded in grips and like many of you find the grips much too thin. However I see that there's also one that uses flat sides with regular 1911 grip scales. Why they'd make a version with anything else other than one that accepts regular 1911 grip scales is beyound me and beyond logic. It makes the gun more comfortable and customizable all at the same time.

In an e-mail to him, he has no problems shipping to Canada, and even says he can mix different colors than what's offered.
