Ruger No 1....375 H&H or .45-70..

Agreed but........

IMO that really depends on the rifle and loads.
ie stock shape and overall gun weight otherwise "felt recoil" as Ken Waters put it :recoil velocity[the speed at which the rifle kicks back]is lower than the .300 magnums giving the shooter a chance to roll with the recoil instead of the sharp punch of the later. And typically .375's are built on heavier platforms absorbing some of the thump.Twice the recoil of a 30-06 with 180gr bullets....we were shooting 300gr factory through a Sako fiberclass last week and it wasn't bad at all [They are a light gun]........Harold

IF you are insisting on a Ruger No 1, these two rifles are very different. I can say this because I have owned both and the rifles are night and day. The 375 H&H comes in the much heavier and longer barreled Tropical. The 45/70 comes in the much lighter, shorter and compact version. If you sit alot, ant take longer shots I think the 375 would be a better choice. If you walk alot and shoot from ground blinds or do shorter range work, I would take the 45/70 any day. For me, I just didn't find the 375 very versatile in the No 1 as I found it very heavy and quite long. The tiny little 45/70 however fit me perfect.

I agree when I was a teenager I shot a Win Model 88 lever in .308. There was something about the stock and my cheek bones that didn't match any it blooded ny nose most everytime I shot it.

My .375 is light but the recoil is not bad as far as Im concerned and I would shoot the .375 H&H before I would that mean ole' .308:D

You made a good choice in the .375 IMO.

Just get a .458 win mag , just to be different, cause it seems no one is using one these days. And they certainly drop things on the ground in a hurry. My dad is one of them. His shoulder still bothers him.

I have both rifles is stainless. I got the 375 H&H years ago and love it, one of those guns I will never sell. I just recieved the 45/70 yesterday from Clay at Prophet River and I have to say that after examining it I can see where in certain application it has its advantages, shorter and lighter for heavier bush. I can't comment on how effective it is hunting yet, but I have had zero issues with my 375 on 3 deer and one moose all one shot kills.

Congratulations! You are the proud owner of the classiest regular-production rifle available for anything like a reasonable price...and in one of the classiest, most useful and versatile chamberings.

Or at least it would have been if it were in blue/walnut!:p

Nice gun Game Stalker... I am a huge Ruger No.1 fan... actually I'm a fan of of many single shot rifles... but the No.1 is at the top. Do you have the gun yet??? Pics??? Range report???

Yes I received the gun several days after starting this thread.. Been busy at work and what not, so never got it to the range nor have I taken any "home" pics yet..But will do asap..

Thanks again to everyone
