Am I going overkill on hunting Elk this Fall using my .375 H&H Mag?
Using Sierra prohunters 270gr SP. I figure this is a very effective one shot one kill combination.

Fairly long shots (out to 250 metres)
The bullets needs to do the job quickly
A follow-up shot might not be possible

So what do you think?
 
it'll work great Im sure, although I personally wouldnt use a Sierra bullet.

I had a No1-H in 416 Rem, shot a moose with it too. great guns!

I would definitely use one for elk if I had the chance. One of my favourite rifles and an awesome cartridge. In fact I've thought it would be fun to use one for black bears. Not necessary but I would really enjoy that rifle/cartridge combo.

The key word in overkill is 'kill' :)

If you're going to just have one shot - that'd probably be a good shot to have.
 
Speaking to the effectiveness of the 375 Ctg. My son took a large bull moose with one shot center chest which went end to end removing a large piece of the right rear quarter in the process. Gutting was a nightmare and he vowed never to take that kind of shot again. I suppose the same could be said for an Elk. I believe the bullet was a Hornady 270 gr handload
 
Nosler makes a hell of a bullet in the 260 gr Accubond. My friend has had great success with the now discontinued 260 gr Ballistic Tip, the replacement Accubond is as good or better.

Barnes makes decent bullets too, but they're not in the same price category as the Nosler AB

If you had bullet seperation issues with the Speer and did not like it, just wait untill you try the Seirra, It's usualy worse.

I don't belive the 375hh requires an expensive bullet to hunt nothamerican big game. With the velocity the 375 lays down combined with the weight and sectional density of the 270 and 300g bullets you simply don't need super bullets. Infact you are problbly better off with regular's because some of the super bullets were designed with dangerous african game in mind.

Then again I was going to pick up some 260g accubonds to try in mine.....
 
The accubond isn't really a 'super bullet'. It's not much different in performance than the old Partition by all accounts - a fine bullet to be sure, but not one of todays 'miricle rounds'. It's advantage lies more in it's ballistic performance improvements over the partition. At least, that's the idea. Weight retention, penetration and tissue damage should be fairly comparable.
 
The 260 gr Accubond is a great choice. Nice high SD and BC, milder recoil than the 300 gr, and though it isn't a self-guided MRX, should tear through an elk--even on a quartering away shot. Plus if your .375 is anything like mine, it'll group into tiny little clovers at the range.

If you don't feel that the 260 has enough soup for long-range shoulder-breakin' shots take a look at the 300 gr TSX. Quite a bit more felt recoil, but the MPBR is only a little bit shorter and it hits a lot harder.
 
Great caliber for elk ( and a lot of other critters too ).

+ 2 on replacing the contoured "hockey puck" ( it's just as hard )
on the rear-end of the Ruger with either a Pachmayr "Old English" Decelerator or a Simms "Limbsaver". Not a lot to choose from between the two pads, but the Pachmayer, IMHO, looks a little cleaner once installed, and is not quite as
"sticky" as the limbsaver. I have a few of each on a number of guns.

To me partitons, accubonds,TSX, A-frames, TBBC ect.. are called super bullets, or something like that. The words "premium bullet" pisses me off for some reason kind of like "premium gas"
 
If you want the old reliable of bullets, go Nosler Partition and never look back. A bit pricey yes, not as bad as the Barnes, and will work anywhere, anytime. And definately get rid of that insult Ruger calls a pad, I like both the Limbsaver and the Decelerator, personal prefference calls it. Had the Decel on a 458 #1, and it still barks, but nowhere near as bad as that red thingy. Mind you if you want a real good bark, try a 458 Lott in a #1, YE-HAW what fun!
