Ruger Precision Alternatives?

I really don't understand how we get from a Ruger precision rifle which costs around $1500 and a Savage 10 TR which is $700 in a $500 chassis with a $300 stock ($1500) to AI, PGW, and Cadex.
None of those rifles can be had for less than $5,000 and realistically it's closer to $7,000 including options, taxes and shipping (not including glass).

This is not a knock against these and other high end rifles.
It is simply not the difference between finishing first and last in a competition.
Give any experienced shooter either the RPR or the Savage and they will be able to compete.
Their points total will most likely be a little lower but not bottom of the pack.
Give a novice shooter any of the above rifles and the results will be bottom of the list.
Shooting fundamentals , dope and time behind the gun will make the difference.

The new Savage 10 BA Stealth can be found in Canada selling for $1499
This rifle comes in a chassis made by MDT and an adjustable buttstock made by FAB Defense.
This is the closest competitor to the Ruger RPR.
In the article below Savage claims to be blueprinting the actions prior to assembly.
As a side note I am glad that Savage seems to be going back towards the side bolt release as opposed to the bottom bolt release on the 10TR.
It will also accept AICS magazines. (Early Magpul AICS mags may have some issues from what I have heard.)

think about it, rem 700 has a history. cadex is better than AI.

All jokes aside, there are plenty of stronger and better designed actions available today than the Rem 700.

If you don't get a Rem 700 action, get a stiller action or a surgeon action

But can you imagine that? Both stiller and surgeon actions are variants of the Rem 700 actions and are similar.

In April you didnt know the first thing about the Remington 700 and now with your 6 months of experience can proclaim it to be "the best, hands down". Good stuff!

The Rem 700 is a great design
It is strong and inherently accurate in design and a very efficient action to manufacture ...from a market, manufacture and value standpoint the 700 is very good especially from the late 60s until recent; but production technology has improved for all manufacturers and there are many competing options that offer more features albeit for more cash but the market is getting competitive. A stiller tac 30 is near the same price as a trued and printed 700
Is it the best?... no it isn't the best...let alone in world:)
Yes, bolt handles have broken off.. they are soldered on to the bolt body...but they are a $500 action...a decent action ...that is all.

Cadex better than AI?.....not sure how to begin to comment that one:)

I'm sure we will find out more where this wisdom has come from...likely experience:)

Lol!

A savage model 12 repeater will likely be better than a stock rem700.
-more steel
-better trigger
-floating bolt head
-easy to swap barrels without a smith

But hey, maybe I'm wrong and should sell my inferior savage actions and upgrade to the superior industry standard Remington 700 that all other actions are judged by. Not saying there's anything wrong with the Remington, I just think there's better options for the budget minded.

Having owned 6 savage rifles and 2 remmy's. I can say I love my savages, I never worry if I will be a 1 moa or better rifle. I know it will be a good shooter.
I do like savage triggers.

Both my remmy's are 5 shots one hole kinda rifles. Its absurd, even with my 223 Yote guns is a .50 moa or better rifle consistently. Not to mention its got a stock trigger that feels like it sits at 5-6 ish pounds.
Now if I drop a nice two stage match trigger in there, that breaks at a 2lbs pull... That will be one hell of a "yote" gun.

My ruger, well go check my write up. Was a waste of money compared to remy or savage.

I guess we should all sell our high end stuff. Hopefully I can get half of what I paid after the market is flooded with AI's, PGW'S, and Cadex rifles.

Interesting....

So in your opinion it Remington outranks Savage but both outrank the Ruger?

Are we talking accuracy only or other factors too (action of the bolt, build quality etc)?
 
Actions are not the most important Rifle in a rifle. The barrel is. An RPR, and I shot/owned one of the first gen's in competition, has no 'action' and does not need to be bedded. That says a lot. You don't need to worry about bedding, or torque tuning like a savage. The RPR'S are good, no no, they are great. I sold mine because I already had a surgeon. Otherwise, I would have kept it and been done with it. And I've owned trued rem 700's and savages.

My advice. Go shoot competition PRS or f-class. It's the best way to test your gear other than going to war. Lol.

this is a list of statistics from proclaimed 100 top shooters and the equipment they've used, speaking of actions of course.:)

over and over again you see trued rem 700 action competing with surgeons and defiance actions. normally year after year, those 3 actions change positions in the top 3, however all remain ranked in the top 3.

For someone to convince to me that a rem 700 action isn't comparable to the above mentioned manufactures of actions hasn't done their homework, I've shot, met, read, and compared gear with hundreds of folk in PRS setups/mil/le and believe me when i tell ya, i'd only use a trued 700 action, followed by surgeon, followed by defiance.

get yourself a rem 700 action. :)
 
having fired a 308 RPR i can't say anything about its accuracy since it out shoots me, but my weatherby mark v outshoots me, and my brothers rem 700 causes me to flinch (who thought a magnum needed to weigh 6lbs 2 ounces???) and probably out shoots me... I don't shoot past 330 yards and I can only group 3" 3 shot groups (averaged, I've had a handful tighter and a couple looser) at 300. If you want a gun that'll shoot well to 1000+ yards I guarantee the RPR i shot will do it even if I won't. If you want a good paper punching rifle to 800 yards if you're much better then me I would push a weatherby vanguard mostly due to it's low cost and great accuracy, not saying it's the best but i'd put it over a non-sniper configuration rem 700.

I'm not sure what you're trying to convince us of really, lots of us here own 700's. What you have to understand is the rem 700 was designed as a hunting rifle with an open top receiver. Many of todays actions have a closed top receiver which makes the action stiffer, there is no arguing this.

Next is the attachment of optics. Todays actions have picatinny rails machined into the closed top of the receiver. No bolts to come loose, ever. Rails come loose at matches, it happens all the time because you have to take the scope off to periodically check torque. With an integral rail you just check your rings before a match, very convenient.

And finally a 60 degree bolt throw is quicker than a 90 degree throw.

The 700 is a good action, but the shooting world has advanced and today there are more modern options out there that were not adapted from a hunting rifle design. They were purpose designed and built for a specific task.

Edited: The 700 isn't even on the top 100 in PRS this year.
