Ruger Precision Rifles

i would have to let someone who owns one of those weigh in, but if it's mostly for hunting, my preference would be to buy a well cared for, used hunting rifle, they would be lighter and the stock doesn't have all the hard edges of a tactical style rifle. Nicer to carry on the shoulder and won't catch on the brush as much as a tactical design.

Hmm thank you, that's what I had another member tell me as well. Was also thinking about a norinco M14 or a FAMAE SG 542 (both semi-auto which left handed me loves) would these guns fall under those setbacks as well? I believe the FAMAE is a lighter gun?

If you're a lefty and looking for a hunting rig, why not something simple like a Tikka T3 or Rem 700 in 308? Lighter, lefty friendly, accurate enough for hunting (and far more accurate than a stock M305). You don't get a 10 round mag with a standard T3 or R700 but enough rounds to do the job.

With the R700 you can buy a second and tacticool it up like a RPR and then you have two rifles that are the same base - same spares, same operation etc.

Indian saying--one shot meat two shot maybe three shot no meat--why have the extra weight of ten shot mag. me i would carry light rifle with 3 or 4 shot capacity and carry extra ammo on my belt not in the gun. but that's just me. whatever you choose is what you choose and as long as you are shooting or hunting enjoy.

Here are some of my load work up targets. It was a pretty windy day (I misread my kestrel it was 3 m/s not KPH) but the rifle still shot well. I am still working up an accurate load but I think the rifle has excellent potential. Sorry for the sideways target - Photobucket won't let me rotate them for some reason:

No offence, but unless that's 200 or 300 yards, I don't see any potential there at all.
Seriously, my 308 ar shoots 155 scenars better than that at 100, with a 1-4 scope.
Something's not right there...

Also, having put an MDT chassis on my Savage, which I recently removed, you will eventually find these rifles are heavy, ungainly and too tall for most gun cases. I took off my MDT. Now my rifle fits in things....

The rpr chassis/rifle is considerably more ergonomic and feature rich than anything mdt makes. It feels a whole lot nicer to get behind than the various mdt builds I've owned and tried.

We had an engineer and former firearms examiner here recently with the new Ruger and was happy to see that this was not another run of the mill rifle - nice folding stock and action and so on.

Ordered some and also custom barrels which you can change yourself.

Should be fun!

Regards,

Peter

Peter,
What are those barrels running for cost? Can you put some specs up for us to see?

I was out with a buddy last week for the first time this year with my version in .308 an was pretty darned happy with its performance
My load was 155gr Berger Match bullets over 43 gr of VV N140 and lit by a Federal primer. Bullets were seated .020" off the lands. Managed to get out to 500 yds with it and although I had one called flier, it still managed sub MOA performance. Over the winter I installed a Witt muzzle Rise Eliminator (Brake), which makes the felt recoil seem like you are shooting a .223- literally!! A CAA Bipod now resides on the front of the Samson hand guard. I think I'll keep the rifle around for a while.
Here is a pic of that 500 yd. group...

Any vendors that are offering drop in barrels - what kind of price range are we looking at??? I might be interested in a 6.5 CM barrel. Currently have the RPR in .308.

working on it but still no firm date to take orders.

go bug Mcgowen barrels... it should be "soon" but never hurts to let them know customers are waiting and interested. They are suggested to be the same costs as Savage prefits with all the same options

PM or email if interested Thanks

My Ruger PR arrived today from a great CGNutter in QC. What a super smooth deal. We truly have a great community around here.

I wanted to share some observations (initial) with the many magazines I've got kicking around the workshop.

I have a few AICS style 10 rounders made by Accurate Mag and of course the 2 of them provided with the Ruger PR come with this brand. What's not to like? :)

My MDT Tac Polymer magazines all work well and cycle smoothly with the RPR. They are all 10 rounders.

My FOUR USGI 5/20 M14 magazines all fit and release from the Ruger Patented Mag system. There is only ONE conflict and that's the 70 degree one piece bolt of Ruger American platform. The bottom lug while being designed to feed from the AICS and Magpul, etc, etc brand magazines, conflict / bump /interfere with the magazine follower of the M14 mags.

That ends the potential for using M14 magazines... "SOME M14 Magazines" is the quote from the Ruger folks. Oh well, we tried.

Now here's a fun surprise; I bought a Magpul Hunter Stock Bottom Magazine adapter and "dremel" tool inlet that magazine well to my camo SPS Tupperware stock. It's my coyote hunter in .260 and deer hunter in .308. That bottom magazine adapter came with a Magpul 5 round .308 magazine. Well this magazine fits the Ruger PR mag well so perfectly and the bolt cycles slicker than snot on a doorknob!

I just unscrewed the muzzle thread protector and screwed on a brake (likely Kommunizt Zhinese) from Amazon dot ca. IT goes on well, but now it's a matter of indexing properly with the right washers for that 5/8" x 24 tip threaded muzzle.

Hey, anybody need some of the 5/8" crush washers? I have a bunch of them for $2 mailed to you if you need a few. :)

More observations to come as I spend some fondle time with this platform.

I found the description for the Amazon dot ca sourced muzzle brake:

HKSTEK®Model 10 Tactical Competition Compact Style Steel Muzzle Brake Pressure Reducer Device with Crush Washer - 5/8"x24 TPI Threaded for .308 Rifle

It's made in Zhina by the Kommunists. I'm smelling this unit for Sulphuric acid or other acid or chemical residue. You know how those high school shop class manufacturing kids can be like.....

I don't want my #### to fall off from chemical hazmat contamination....

So there you go... $42.00 mailed or something like that. I could not resist. I might even buy another one, just because! :)

Cheers,

I just got a RPR in .308 shipped to me today. It should arrive next week.
I was also looking for a cheap brake to put on it today at work and saw that same Model 10 china brake on amazon. I might do just that, if it works... Waiting on your review ;)

Every time I take mine out I love it more and more, just getting use to it and new to the long distance thing, my range only goes up,to 200m so time to take it out to my families farm land and open it up.

Bit of wind today but couldn't resist trying some Hornady 155grn steel match I got at 200m, too bad I pulled one well actually two of the shots and ruined my group. Want to try some 300 and 400 distance groups next.

Hey Barney,

So far all of my Norinco M14 mags and my 10 round AIA mags fit and feed without problems (one AIA mag has issues feeding the last round though). The bolt only hangs up on the follower after the last round is fired. My Gen 2 PMAG's fit and feed great but my XCR-M pistol mags won't lock into the magwell and drop down after feeding the first round. All of my AICS mags fit and feed without issue as well.

Cheers,
Ted

Hey, Ted.... I'm a fricking idiot... I did not try feeding (need to buy some snap caps), any rounds of .308 from my M14 mags. That makes sense now. Yeah, I'm going to head to Epps or Cabelas and find some snap caps and try feeding from the USGI M14 magazines. I know that they like to fit in the mag well perfectly.

Will get back to all of you!

HaHa, I probably would have thought the same thing at first. But luckily I had some snap caps and loaded an M14 mag before I tried fitting the mag to see if it would work ;)

Now you should have a precision rifle that can share mags with your M14 :)

Cheers

Anyone running an angled for grip and bipod ?

Also, any tips on where to find key mod sling attachments ? Assuming I need them, my 6.5 should b here thurs.

It comes with one quick detach sling attachment for the keymod plus a stud type that can mount in the bottom with a short rail.
