hoping in the next little while to get a 44 mag revolver. what are your opinions on the ruger redhawk? i hear they are likely to last a lifetime no matter what you put in them.

I have a 5.5 inch in 44mag (it's on the EE incidently) the only reason I'm selling it is that I have another Redhawk in 45 Colt.

I have a 5.5" blued Redhawk and it is an excellent gun. Put a Wolff spring kit in it and then shoot it until the end of time. It shoots like a laser with light loads and will handle anything you want to use up to thermonuclear level. Gratuitous picture:

I owned a 5.5" in 45 Colt a while back and would handle close to Casull loads with ease. It was a tank and ran like a top. Wish she was still in my safe now.

How do they compare to a 625 in size of frame? I have thought long and hard about getting one in 44 mag with a 4.2" barrel. From the pics they look like they are N frame size. Only shot one once and on that occasion the owner had loaded it with a thermonuclear load and I was to busy trying to get feeling back in my wrist to notice the size of the frame.

Take Care

I want one too just waiting on a 4.2 or 5.5 " to come along on the ee. I've watched tons of videos on these tanks. I even prefer the looks of the Redhawk over the S&W 629. The super Redhawk on the other hand is hideous

Very happy with my 7.5" version, picked it up last year used and took a couple months working up my own handloads for it and it's handled them all without any problems whatsoever. Have even put a couple boxes of Buffalo Bore heavy +P+ rounds through it and while my hands took a beating, the revolver itself no issues. It's no beauty queen, has some rough edges/tool marks, but it's built like a tank with lockup/timing still spot on. Very simple to work on/disassemble too as an added bonus.

looks nice. just bought one from a gentlemen on the forum today. have you had decent accuracy with 44 special loads at all?

The redhawk is the predecessor to the super redhawk and is a very solidly built gun. I've always wanted one. There are 3 reasons why I don't own one.
1) I have a 629
2) the redhawk is like no other Ruger product unlike the super redhawk which is basically a GP100 in .44 Rem Mag. (I own a GP100 in .357) Many parts are identical between the super redhawk and the GP100. Trigger group, springs etc. The redhawk is a breed all to itself.
3) cost...guns are expensive and much needs to be contemplated before "jumping in".

Another consideration between the redhawk and super redhawk that's just come to me as I type this is the grips/stocks. The two guns are very different here as well. The redhawk has two panels with exposed straps, the super redhawk (like the GP100) have that odd handle tang that accepts one piece stocks. When shooting heavy loads (+P+) a solid one piece stock many will find more comfortable to shoot...YMMV.

To answer your question though; yes, the redhawk will handle factory recommended loads no problem.

which grips are those, are they overly large?

I have an older Redhawk with a MagnaPorted 5 1/2" barrel and feed it a hearty diet of Campro 240 TCP FNs pushed at 1250 fps with WIN 296. My only complaint is I didn't buy one sooner.
