Ruger Scout 308 vs 450 - Deer Rifle

It's crazy, but $100/box once you add the tax probably isn't far off.

And nobody with a functioning, healthy brain would pay that lol. BTW I never said he could buy a box of Nosler for half that price.

Some stores currently have Federal Premium 150 grain Ballistic Tip in stock in the high $40s range. So yeah, even if you walk out paying $57 or so, alright. I'll say 57% instead of half? Or should I poll every member and see what they are paying then average it out lol

My guess is no.

Depends on the individual rifles/barrels and the ammo used but not much at all
No

Where can I get some?

How much velocity drop is there really between a 18” and 16” 308 barrel?
And more importantly for my purposes does it change anything for a 100 yard deer rifle?
Does it even change anything for a 200 yard deer rifle.
My guess is no.

Lets say 30 fps per inch, so 80 fps between a 16.1 & 18.7" 308 Scout

150gr Hornady American Whitetail factory ammo
18.7" 2650 fps (measured via labradar)
16.1" estimated 2570 fps

If you sighted in for a +/- 3" maximum point blank range, the two would compare like this :

18.7"
100y +2.8"
127y +3.0"
200y +1.2"
221y 0.0" zero
258y -3.0"
315y -10.0"
Retains 2000 fps impact to 270 yards
Retains 1000 ft-lbs energy to 395 yards

16.1"
100y +2.8"
124y +3.0"
200y +0.9"
214y 0.0" zero
250y -3.0"
305y -10.0"
Retains 2000 fps impact to 240 yards
Retains 1000 ft-lbs energy to 365 yards

Where can I get some?

probably the same place you can get Hirtenburger 147gr for a SKS

And about 400 ft/lbs more energy behind the longer, heavier for caliber bullet. Whether nor not that's important is up to you.

You are comparing a cheaper brand with a cheaper bullet to a more expensive brand with a premium bullet. Not exactly a fair comparison.

He said a specific type of ammo was expensive and underperformed. Whether or not you think the ammo is worth the price is irrelevant to what the price is or how it performs.

I had one the early 'International' model GSR's without the flash hider, 18.7" barrel. I bedded it and replaced the trigger return spring. Its was a wonderfully accurate rifle and very practical. I mount a 2-7x scope low over the action and used the rear rail holes on the brrel to maintain the BUIS idea. I have no use for the scout scope concept, it doesnt work for me, other than its nice when carrying the rifle around the action.

I regret selling it! It was a great all round rifle.

Unless I wanted a larger bore on an AR I cant see any reason for me to have a .450BM. the .308 is significantly more versatile and useful for me.

Other than the price tag I think the 16.5” 308 with the synthetic stock would make an awesome little bush rifle.
Mount a 1-5x scope in the traditional scope fashion (not scout style) and I think it would make a compact maneuverable setup.

For the purpose of shots less than 150 yards I think it fits the ticket.
Too bad Tikka doesn’t offer a 16.5” T3 Lite

Too close to what I already have.
The short rifle is what would make it different than what’s already in the safe.

Who knows maybe if I actually see one and handle it in a store I may be put off it.
I do see in a number of videos the bolt and feeding seems a bit more finicky than other rifles

I had a 308 version that I regret selling. Looking at your pros and cons the 308 is the way to go. In your pros for the 450 I would strike off the brush deflection. In my opinion that’s a wives tail. Your ammo for the .308 is going to be way cheaper and the 308 offers huge versatility in bullet weights 125gr-200+ grains depending on barrel twist and magazine room.

I owned a Scout in 308 and also regret selling it ! Anyhow everything BARE has said is FACT ! RJ

Talk about cherry picking!

On the same website, here is a price breakdown of all the hunting-specific (match and FMJ excluded) 308 Winchester ammo offered at Nechako...

9 boxes prices under $50
9 boxes priced $51-65
11 boxes priced $66-$75
6 boxes priced $76-$99
2 boxes priced $100

What do you think Nechako sells more of? Sure, someone is willing to pay for those two hundred dollar varieties, but clearly that's the extreme top end of 308 ammo in stock and the vast majority (29 of 37 different varieties or 78%) are under $75 per box. 45% are under $65!

So, yeah, your argument about price is almost as ridiculous as your argument about the SKS.

Tell me again how a 30 cal 150 grain bonded bullet at 2450fps is a better 100 yard Deer Rifle than a 30 cal 125 grain vanilla bullet at 2500 fps.

The short barreled 308 is the King Sh*t of Turd Mountain.

Yeah but then you don't pay for the priveledge of Nosler's soft af brass lol. The implication of the price of Nosler ammo meaning it is high quality is pretty funny.

And MiG is gonna go right back to pretending that no other 150gr load can do much better than that...and that 165-168 grain loads do WAY better than that...and...

Wanna shoot premiums? Buy some 150gr Partitions for $45.99 and save 54% vs buying the Nosler ammo.

https://www.gotenda.com/product/federal-vital-shok-308-win-150-gr-nosler-partition-box-of-20/

Don't care if its "good enough", that isn't really praise IMO, would rather shoot that load at 2500 fps than 7.62x39 anything especially from a clapped out battle rifle made to be a 5 MOA system 70 years ago
