Ruger sp9 the good & bad

Hated mine when I first got it...build quality is cheap, everything is cast or stamped that is metal, trigger is mushy with no indication of break, lots of tiny little springs n #### that look like they could break easy, and I couldn't shoot it for ####...
I was going to sell it because it was not up to par for me, then decided to shoot it one last time. I shot it first instead of the 1911s and target .22s I normally warm up on. With a little concentration I was dropping the plates every shot... Not bad now, and its still in the safe. Its worth the $450 or whatever...but it is a hard gun to shoot as well as something with a decent sa trigger.
Its been completely reliable, but I still question how long it will really last.

Did you get one of the early SR9's? Mine from 2011 is nothing like this.

SR9 is a great gun for the price, best for someone with smaller hands and likes a 1911 grip angle. Mine has fed everything I've given it from 115 through 147 FMJ , JHP and +P+.

I've had the striker break recently in dry fire (with mag in). It's not as well finished, as some and when I first held it, sure felt like cheap toy quality. Bought it anyway and glad I did because it's a great gun.

You wont' find many mods like glock or m&p. Holsters are harder to come by with less options. Careful racking the slide, the safety can take a hunk from your hand if it gets pinched in the process. Sights are for bulls eye shooting. I really like the trigger pull and reach (best so far for my hands).

Sorry a sr9 just getting into shooting and am looking for a entry level gun and it looks like a good price thanks for the info

No it's newer....had it a little over a year. Your's isn't cast and stamped steel, with lots of little springs in the frame? lol or did you mean your trigger is OK and not mushy with no indication of when it is going to break?

Love mine! Took a bit to shoot well but that was me adjusting to it with grip and stance. Now it's my favorite. Installed a 3.5 lbs Ghost trigger bar and some grip tape (can't recall the company; it's precut and adds a nice texture to the grip). Very reliable! For the cost it's the best 9mm out there IMO

The later. Trigger is fine. Small springs? Some, never had an issue with them like I've had in others. Stamped steel, yeah and in a polymer pistol :D

The first thing you should do is be a bit more specific on your location. Doesn't have to be exact (like mine).
If you were near me I may be persuaded take you to the range to fire mine.

As for you question - mostly the only people who seem to have a problem with the SR9 are the ones who don't own one. I love mine and will never give it up. Feels good and never a problem. It is a toss up which I like better - my SR9 or my GP100.

i got one, picked it off a co-worker for $100 less then he got it for new and he only put like 2 mags through it.

i like it.
its not my fav gun but for the price its a damn fine gun.
i recommend it to anyone with medium to small hands and any new shooter i come across who's looking to get into shooting.
for a sub $500 gun you cant go wrong.

ive had no failures on it and im not easy on my guns, i think nothing of dropping them on the ground and kicking them around then picking them up and shooting them.
mags are easy to find for it.
holsters seem to be around for it.
and for a new shooter its REAL easy to take down and clean.
just like a M&P and Glock, flip the secret switch and the slide falls off, barrel pops out with the spring and your done.

im planning on letting my kids beat it up for a few years before i let them fondle any of the guns i actually use.

for the price you cant go wrong with the SR9.

(sorry im a visual person, here's mine, if you look close you will see its sporting scratches and such, i wasnt kidding about playing hard!)

Remind me not to buy any guns from you  ...

And now back to our main feature

My question with this gun is; is it really more affordable than a glock 17 or M&P9 off of the EE?

The Ruger SR9 is meant for a giant market like the USA where you'd find thousands of people who think saving $100 dollars on a handgun is worth buying something of less quality.

I like my SR9. The trigger is different from my previous handguns and I needed to get used to it. I have found this gun to be as precise as the rest of my pistols........with the exception of the target 22.

Being a new shooter you may want to get some snap caps because it may take a while to stop the sights from moving while pulling the SR9 trigger.

There is also the GP K100 from Dlask for $399....would be a decent choice for a newer shooter. Has a much better trigger, rotating barrel makes for nice recoil.

Beat me to that suggestion. I ordered a Grand Power K100 from Dlask on Sunday. From the reviews I was able to find it seems like the best value going right now.

I had one and really like it, not a gun that you can compare with Glock's quality but looks better and it is very comfortable to grip, it is also fit small size hand nicely. Ruger's QC stanadard is not great and the gun's machining is quite different from on to the other. The one that I bought, I went through several to pick the best.
