You guys should bear in mind that if this rifle indeed accepts AI mags then a five rounder would fit no problem.
 
I like it.

Double stack mags would be preferred.

Hopefully after a successful run in .308 (only caliber it is in right now), they'll expand the lineup of calibers. One of these in .358 win would be a mighty fine short range hunting rifle.

If it had a double stack five round magazine, it could be made to fit flush with the stock and the ten round magazine would fit rougly flush with the bottom of the trigger guard. It has the same disadvantage as an M14 (or similar battle rifles with 20 round magazines), but with only half the capacity.

I think Ruger would have been better off to either retain the hinged floorplate magazine or use a more compact detachable setup.

While a number of modern bolt actions use single stack magazines, I still think Peter Paul Mauser was on to something when he introduced the double column magazine. I think that the main motivation for these single stack magazines is that they are cheaper to manufacture, rather than providing any functional advantage over a properly executed double stack arrangement.

They had considered going with M14 magazines but they encountered differing tolerances between various manufacturers and couldn't get it to work with any degree of reliability hence the choice of AI mags. I think it was a good call. I've used them before and they are awesome mags. Not cheap though.

In all seriousness, good on Ruger for trying to get a practical rifle out on the market. I think they ALMOST got it right, but certain bits are definitely not to my taste. I'll stick to my No5, until someone designs something better in .308WIN.

30-06? :confused: That would contravene the scout concept. Scout rifles are to be short and light. That includes short action caliber for lighter rifle and ammo. Specs on Ruger's site only shows it in 308 Win right now.

You're saying this rifle weighs in at 4lbs? :eek: My M14S weighs 8lbs with scope and sling! :p :D Also of note, the Ruger Scout is not comparable to a M14 as it's a bolt action.

Not to mention at least half the firing rate (semi-auto vs bolt)!
 
There are two disadvantages to a single column magazine.
The magazine will be longer than a double stack magazine of the same capacity.
The magazine is not adapted for loading through the receiver. It has to be detached to be loaded.
