Ruger's new rifle...

Many of Jeff Cooper's concepts for the Scout were designed on what technology was available and trendy several decades ago. I fail to see the point in retaining stripper clip loading capability for example if you have a couple good, light-weight box magazines in your pocket. Stripper clips are no longer commonly available and not standardized anyway even on surplus 7.62mm. This was also one of the driving reasons for his advocating a low and forward mounted, low power, IER scope. Is this necessary now that we have 2 inch long scopes with a wide FOV like a T-1?

Jeff Cooper also advocated the scout rifle as a "battle rifle." Strictly fantasy IMHO. I would be happy to use it for hunting, plinking, predator defence in the bush, etc.

For those hoping for big caliber versions look into Jeff Cooper's theories on the "Thumper." This is just a Mag fed M-77 not much really new here, its just packaged from the factory as a scout. If you start adding more heavy accessories and playing with other calibers you are no longer talking about a scout rifle. The M-77 already exists in lots of different variations and calibers.

I love the idea of a scout and will definitely get one of these if I can. This rifle just saves me the time, money and expense of adapting another rifle or buying the over priced (but very neat) Steyr version.

You’d be hard pressed to get an M-14 with magazine to weight 8lbs without a scope and mount.

Not hard pressed at all! I just replaced the steel flip-up butt plate with a rubber one, took the 'junk out of the trunk' :p (that is the cleaning rods, tools, oil, etc...), and used a light stock. Mine weighs in at 8lbs with scope and sling.

I think that something along the lines of a 1-4x scope mounted conventionally would actually be a more versatile setup than the scout-type scopes, given that charger loading isn't widely used.

-Faster into action at 1x
-More magnification for longer range shots
-No glare on the ocular lens when the sun is behind you

While the scout concept has merit as a sort of general purpose rifle, it has undoubtedly been superseded as a serious choice for a combat arm. WWII was the last gasp of the bolt action as an infantry rifle, save for sniping.

The Thumper is actually an idea for a short-barreled, lightweight semiauto carbine in a calibre like .44 Automag or .45 Winchester Magnum.

Integral scope mounts, picatinny rail, iron sights and a flash hider...sounds like this rifle wishes it was a semi.

This is the new non restricted mini 14 design for when the Libs, and NDP, start restricting or banning the mini 14!

Good old Ruger catering to our political BS again!

Lol... gotta love being one step ahead of Layton and Iggy.
It's nice.

Taking the AIA magazines is nice, but I can't find anyone that actually keeps these magazines in stock. Seems like I gotta by an AIA rifle if I want another magazine.

um. This is just a scout rifle. You know, Jeff Coopers idea of the ideal general purpose sportsman rifle? Similar in essence to the Savage Scout and the Steyr Scout. It's even called a scout rifle by Ruger. Why is there all this confusion about it being a battle rifle or a wannabe semi or even political BS about this replacing the Mini 14?

i like it, it is on my top 5 rifles next to own, i think a fastfire or aimpoint mini would be good on this rifle, props to ruger i am sure they will sell truck loads....
