Running low on x39...

‘Herter’s hunting ammunition’ from Cabela’s occasionally goes on sale for around 20-25 a box. Brass cased soft points. Let time I bought a few they were all stamped Winchester on the base. Shoot as well as S&B in my Howa.

I honestly have no idea how accurate the red box is as all I use my SKS for is semi-auto dumping 5rds into a dirt berm as fast as possible and realizing how crazy it would be to actually see combat, and how easily you'd be ended within 100y.
Im aiming at 3/8" dots so often that I forget how MASSIVE a human torso is in comparison.

My SKS is collector grade and doesn't see corrosive. I will keep looking around. A couple of gun shows next month in my neck of the woods
SO is mine, its only seen corrosive surplus ammo. clean it after you shoot, especially within a few hours and you will be fine. Corrosive ammo will only pit your rifle if you leave it uncleaned for days in a high moisture environment

Herter's is a Cabela's in house brand that is produced by Winchester for Cabela's. Its just rebranded whitebox ammo

What are our current Ammo brand options? Somebody needs to build a comprehensive list from all the good input here and other posts

Here’s what I can think of, though got to be more out there..

* Corrosive Surplus - runs around $250/720 rounds. Better quality than Red Box but corrosive. Clean with hot water mixed with balistol/cutting oil and all good to go.

* Norinco Red Box - $11-15/box of 20 rounds. Non corrosive but not great, though never had a misfire. Cases expand quite a bit and some chambers (bolt actions) don’t like em. Runs dirty.

* Scorpio. Steel core FMJ. Non corrosive. Maybe also SPs? $180/300 rounds on a few sites.. Never used this stuff but would like to pickup a box or two.

* Prvi Partizan PSPs, FMJs. Brass cased non corrosive. Around $22 box/20. Pretty solid and consistent

* Herter’s Hunting ammo from Cabela’s. Repackaged Winchester. Brass cased PSPs. $40/20 rounds. Often on sale for 1/2 that price with flat rate $15 shipping.

*S&B brass cased SPs. Also FmJs. Shoots good and straight. Consistent groups. Around $25/box.

* Hornady Black brass cased PSPs. The best ammo I’ve tried in 7.62. Accurate and non corrosive. Also the most expensive. $50/box at my lgs.

* Barnaul if you can find it on the 2nd hand market…

I use the S&B or Herter’s (Winchester) for hunting and the corrosive Chinese surplus for plinking practice.
Haven’t found a cheapish non-corrosive that shoots as well as the surplus.

I’d rather shoot straight and waste a bit more time cleaning than waste a bit more money on Norinco Red box and be shooting doilies.

Yes, the Chinese surplus they are selling right now is pretty good. I don't understand why people are getting freaked out because it is corrosive. It is actually only the primer which is. Just clean your rifle when you come home. Taking apart takes one minute - if you don't know how, there are plenty of youtube videos. Then take the receiver/barrel and run whatever fits your bill through it and hot water to rinse it all out. Assemble. Personally I like to separate the wood so it won't get scuffs etc. The whole process takes 5 to 10 minutes.

There's more out there. A few offerings from federal & Winchester, PMC bronze, lapua, MFS, norc white box and whatever pops up at gun shows. I've still got a decent amount of n/c brass case, South African ZA surplus that shoots really well.

I agree and I used to religiously clean-up with my previous shooter-grade SKS. My current 2008 IZH import gets special treatment. :)

For 70c / round plus tax when Not on Sale - Double the cost of corrosive Chinese.
I found that Scorpio is one of many CZECH products made by STV Group in CZ. Should be pretty good quality IMO. I have a Ruger Ranch in x39 and have No probs with 'enamel steel case'. If you do you can sell it to someone with a "Nice" SKS ? ( clik on CZ at Upper Right beside 'mag-glass' to get English translation) http s://www.stvgroup.cz/produkty-a-sluzby/munice

I thought I read somewhere mfs/barnaul was opening a new plant in Austria or something. The us has had sanctions against Chinese ammo for 30 years and there has been a shortage there since the Russia sanctions started. Also I thought the reason Hornady had to stop making thier steel cased ammo was because the cases came from somewhere overseas that was affected by sanctions. Could be wrong about that.

The only options under $1 right now are all Chinese. Surplus, non corrosive norinco, Scorpio

RRH - A Czech company 're-selling' Chinese mfrd ammo ? ? Pics of stamps ?
On the link posted it shows the 311 head stamp. Scroll down to the pics of the cartridges in the tray. Same trays too. Sterling did this in Canada also, not sure if they still do but were selling “battle packs” of loose yugo m67 for 60ish dollars for 50 rounds. Zero indication on the box of the origin or anything, quite a let down when you open it up and realize you payed a buck a round for repackaged surplus. Not so much the case here as it’s regularly priced at $13/20 so basically a free $10 ammo can
