Rural property: storing unattended vehicle

The largest motivator to getting a vehicle besides hauling building materials is an evac vehicle. The 20 minute hike out would suck after some of the worst-case-scenario events of a hunt camp. A truck also wins over an ATV here too.

an ATV will be stolen in a few months

a beater 4x4 truck with no plates, leave doors unlocked and glove box open, pull the battery

If you get to know the neighbour, a case a beer a year is good parking fee.

If you leave it, setup at least two trail cameras.

Multiples because one is on the vehicle and the hidden ones are on your primary camera.

Caught a lot of people messing with my main but they never thought to look for the others.

Iff'in it has a distributor, pull the rotor.
Removing the battery is a gooder idea as if it's any good, well
it will grow legs.
Keep the fuel tank plum empty too.

On my deer camp I was able to get a 20 ft. long Sea Can delivered. I store my ATV inside with 4 good locks on the 4 door latches.
Even in far north of Ont. it only cost $3,200. delivered. Cheaper that building & much more secure .

Have you considered an older tractor with a loader. 3pt hitch would be nice but not needed if you have a loader. Some plywood and plexiglass will fashion a cab. Use the draw bar to pull in a trailer. You'd be amazed what an old tractor can go through and making up forks for the bucket will lift material around on site. As others suggested get friendly with a neighbour.

Give me a couple cordless tools and locks on a sea can won’t stop me for long, I’ve got a 40’ can on my property and I’ve spent a lot of time looking at the door locks on mine. Wouldn’t deter anyone that really wants to get inside.

Technology is at a range state when you can potentially fight back against thieves.

Place trail cameras around your belongings so you have record of exactly when something happens.

You can purchase GPS units that are used to track things (think of find my phone/device). You can stick one anywhere out of weather's way and should last for years.

OK you catch them on camera
Then what??
They damaged an unlicensed, uninspected , uninsured basket case old truck that they say to the judge they figured was just abandoned in the woods
Is it worth the court time for what a trespassing charge maybe

I don't see it

Their photo on social media will give them the respect they so desire.

The neighbour is your best option and just maybe he's got a beater truck he would lend you when you need to borrow it

No one cares, i have to agree cameras are kind of pointless unless it's just for your knowledge, police won't put any effort into an old offroad beater truck.
Put up a structure or sea can like others have suggested , its one thing to fuk around with some abandoned looking truck in the bush, but break and enter would make some people second guess getting in trouble

You might get lucky with it not being knorked around with for a year, you might get ten years and no trouble.
But, the one time you are planning something special (work party) and you roll up and some schtizhead has stolen it or torched it or stripped a part off.
My buddy had his cabin vandalized a few yers back and after another three years he bought several trail cams.
He has about 10k of pics of lots of people walking his proerty , animals walking his property , trees falling on his property and guys poaching...as in hunting out of season on or near his property.
The 5-1/2 acre lot is fenced so people know that is private property.
How comfortable ar you at leaving a 2k $ vehicle on the lot ?
As in if it was to disappear would you be ok with that or if it was used in a crime again would you be ok with that?
Just talking out loud is all.

Your other option is to buy a new daily driver that’s capable of the drive in, once we bought our rural property the first thing I did was sell my car and buy a 4x4 truck. We moved up full time about a year or so later, buying the truck was a good choice.

Id be more worried about animals making a home in it and chewing through wires, rendering it useless when you need it.

Your best bet would be to buy a 2nd vehicle (like it was suggested to get a beater truck) and use that to make your trips from home. Drive it once a week when in town to keep the seals from drying out and other parts from siezing up. Yes you gotta pay insurance on it and plates but you also have a backup vehicle incase something goes wrong with your daily driver.

These are the answers, and the least headaches all around. Get a decent truck and just drive it to your place when you want to go. An old beater left in the bush isn’t going to work when you need it and is plain more trouble than it’s worth.

Camouflage? Got a thick grove of pines you could pull into and brush the truck over? Or dig a pit, drive into it, cover with tarp, add sticks and leaves ;). Seriously though, I’d have to agree with those who suggest that even if it didn’t get stolen or vandalized, an old beater is going to let you down if it’s left unattended and then you’ll be stuck with a broken down truck 1.3kms in the bush.

As long as you have the room at home (which seeing as you are in Toronto may not be the case) I’d invest in a trailer and an atv and haul it up there with my daily driver. You are going to need a trailer anyhow so get one you can tow behind your daily driver and put the atv in it.

Ok MacGruber. You’ve got one cordless 20v 3/8” keyless chuck drill. And a 1/4” 20v impact.

Go.

Cordless grinder or sawzall will handle it, bring an extra battery or two. I used to get paid to break in to houses and secure them for the bank so I don’t think I’d have much trouble if I had the right tools.
