Russian SKS45 long thread.

Has anyone here got a 'less than satisfactory' hand-select from Frontier?

Yeppers. Rusted chamber, non matching stock/ handguard with peeling shellac and refurbed. Marlin has offered to take the rifle back and send me a rufurb and also refund the hand select fee.

For easy manipulation of the safety - you just need to slide your thumb down in this notch to put the safety on. I can see this would be especially needed if you were wearing mitts or gloves

Taz at DHL Calgary made me super happy this morning when she said I actually had 2 packages despite what their computer said

Top is a 1952 Tula, gas piston is electropencil forced match, and stock is force matched as well (can still see the 1953 on it faintly) the bolt holdback for when the mag is empty doesnt spring up and hold the bolt back though. I dont see any of the diamond stamps for a refurb, but who knows, Im not Curton

bottom is a 1954 Tula, piston, mag, and stock are force matched, laminate handguard, no refurb stamps on it either

the 54 appears to be chrome lined barrel, the 52, I cant tell.... it doesnt look shiny enough to be chrome lined, but it also doesnt look as dull as straight iron, maybe I'll be able to tell better when I clean it (the 52 had powder residue, the 54 did not)

thats the right thing to do .

i guess the rude dude (his order got shredded) didnt order a hand select or you would have his . :D

Mine was the same. I just had to clean up the weld put in to pin the mag and she works just fine now.

hopefully I'll get around to giving them more than a paper towel rub down, by tomorrow evening.... some how I dont think the g/f is going to appreciate that I stink like cosmo, it appears to be Gojo, fast orange, and soap proof (smell wise anyway)

My rifle arrived yesterday. I finally got to cleaning the grease off.

It's a mint '53 Tula. Numbers matching too. Judging by the lack of wear I'd say it's unissued as well. The only flaw is a few places where the finish had chipped and a blemish in the bluing on the dust cover.

I was wondering, because some douchebag called me a dumbass and said it was 'to make pulling the trigger much easier you dumbass'.

He knows who he is. I kindly asked ' How in the name of sweet Lord are holding onto your rifle when you fire it?

Got mine yesterday. A 1951 Tula non-rufurb, all matching numbers, chrome bore; it's in really nice condition (one small mark on the stock). I was wondering if I could scotch- brite the area and add a bit of shellack over this small mark? Other than that, this riffle is a real beauty.

oh and before I forget, Dealing with Marlin/Frontier was awesome as always, all my issues were related to DHLs Vancouver call center (the people at the DHL office in Calgary were all great)

Ive done that with furniature before, or if you get some 500 grit sandpaper that'll work too. Just dont use the no-name scotch brite type pads, they will leave green grit in the finish, and you'll end up having to sand everything down.

also, Im not sure about how it will react with the finish thats already there, but you might want to try Varathane instead of shellack. It holds up a lot better to wear and tear, and if you get it wet, doesnt leave water marks.

I know that my hand select is a 1952 as Marlin told me that much over the phone. Won't have it till the 29th though as mine only shipped Thursday :(

I hope for an unissued, but being 1952, I doubt it will be. Secondly I hope a non-refurb. I know it has no refurb diamond or square stamp (he checked for me), but not all refurbs have that. I'm not hopeful though b/c he didn't mention any stock cartouches apart from the serial number :( It should have a big Tula star on it an a year stamp.

Definitely I do not want a bead blasted bayonet. If it's not shiny, or is otherwise identifyable as being refurbed, it'll be in the EE in no time at all.

By hand select, I was clear on my order form that I wanted a non-refurb and would rather have no gun at all than a non-collectible refurb. Just my $.02 and we'll see what arrives.

I remain hopeful. Though I won; be upset at Frontier - I get the impression they are trying their best and simply cannot always know the difference between refurb and non-refurb.

I agree with what you said - I am happy with Marlin and company, but I really wanted a numbers matching gun. I think I will be putting mine up for sale, as some people who ordered shooter grade guns received all matching number guns, while I paid for hand select on got a mismatch (in nice shape - not complaining about that).

"...and that THX-1138 was engaged in promoting the destruction of historic State property by advocating the use of sand paper and Varathane on a mint Tula SKS!" "Shame!"

Okay, I'm finally in. I placed an order on Thursday. Marlin is great to deal with.

I almost feel guilty that I will (hopefully) end up waiting for a lot less time than most other people. I had been planning to wait until Savage Harbour Arms (here in PEI) got their shipment in, but waiting got the best of me

Can't wait (and have to take my lunch to work for a few weeks as this wasn't something we budgeted for...:D )

I'm joining the club!

ok, Im trying to figure out what one piece of the cleaning kit is called and actually used for (I tried to use search, but I cant find it)

can anyone tell me what the third thing down in this picture is? it reminds me of a grinding wheel dresser, and since its screws on to the end of the SKS cleaning rod, I assume its for ramming down the barrel. Is it some kind of unusual patch holder?
