Russian SKS45 long thread.

Canada Post tracking system has mine arriving in Montreal at 16:41 or so this afternoon. I guess I will get it on Monday. So much for a 3 day guaranteed delivery.

NOT fair!!! :evil:my tracking page is still unchanged, shows winnipeg.. I'm in the glorious Hammer, i should get mine before ottawa!

Got my SIR SKS by UPS today , its a 1954R completely painted metal looks like crap . Nice stock though . Not impressed with SIR . Been waiting over a yr & when finally arrive , Price is higher than advertised condition is worse than advertised , BUT HEY AT LEAST I GOT ONE FROM THEM
On the other hand if this gun was sitting on a table at a gun show for $200 I would buy it . So the gun for the price is good but the deal with SIR was bad . The one I got from Frontier is MUCH nicer and didn't cost much more than SIR's increased price

Got my SIR order today. Meh...still a good price for these rifles, but I think I will be putting a few up on the EE. Still waiting for Ron's Outdoor in Edson to see if he receives any from the IZH shipment. I believe that is what they will be...I hope that is what they will be...I know that is what they will be....bah...who knows.

I phoned Cabellas today. I ordered an SKS on March 7, 2008. The shipment they got in is fully committed. They said they covered most orders from Jan/Feb 2008 so it/when they get their next shipment in I guess I'm near the top of the list.

No problem though, I did get one from Del Selin Gunsmith in Vernon.

I didn't like the painted bolt and bolt carrier so removed the paint. It is really tough stuff. I softened it with Mastercraft brake cleaner then wire brushed it with a steel wheel in the drill press. I came out looking right.

I think about the only thing that paint would be good for, is spraying underneath your auto to keep road salt from eating the metal.

Got my SIR SKS yesterday. Rifle is nearly a complete forcematch. The only matching number on the gun is the magazine, which is blued, not painted. The bolt and carrier are from a 1949 or 1950 SKS (spring loaded firing pin), the bolt is serial numbered to a different rifle with no forcematch to match it to this rifle. The top cover is from a 1953 Tula and is an electropencil forcematch and the trigger group is off a post 52 rifle. The stock is on its 4th rifle. The chrome lined barrel and gas piston are brand spankin' new. I am guessing this rifle was rode hard and put away wet, hence the brand new barrel, piston and scavenging other rifles for parts.

ouch! and these are the excellent condition unissued SKS's from SIR? SIR has a warped sense of what an excellent condition SKS is. I'm kinda terrified of what the $169 ones will look like if/when they show up.

It looks like the quality of SIR shipments got worst and worst as they got to the last rifles out. Could have they just put together all the left-over parts from damaged rifles......?

Actually, the quality of the rifles isn't all that bad. The barrels are brand new and the rifles are in fairly decent shape.

My gripe is with the electro-stenciling and black paint.

Yeesh! You think they might have heard of parkerizing at some point in their history .

I actually think they would make a great project for an aspiring gunsmith. I would like to get all the metal parts in the white, then fill the old serial numbers on the trigger guard with weld and file it smooth. After that, I'd blast everything with aluminum grit and parkerize, then paint and bake on a coating of matte black PTFE GunKote.

With a carefully refinished stock, they would probably look awesome!

Oh yeah, and a better arrangement for pinning the mag to five rounds. What a butchered weld job they have!

well i'm pissed.

they lost my order. i discovered this before the shipment came in they told me the best they can do is to have me put in a new order and i would end up in the at the end of the line, as they couldnt actually tell that i had placed an order.

I explained they had been updating me on my order for a year now and they should rightfully put me somewhere ahead in the queue. I had this email from last june:

Your order is dated before the 1st of May so there will NOT be a problem in making the first shipment allocation

Sincerely

L____ay

SIR Mailorder

Division of Cabela's Retail Canada Inc.

They'd look into it and call me back. No calls. I call back - no one available to speak to me, they'll call back. I call back, L____ay is not around. This goes on for a couple of weeks.

I call back -- all the rifles gone. Sorry.

Now thats customer service - way to make the situation right.

So heres a big FU to you SIR.

Time to take my money elsewhere -- but the reality of living in canada is that the we don't have the market choices as in the States, at some point i'll probably end up dealing with them as a result of no other choice.

plightning... Does what DAR701 have to say about the SIR rifles make you feel any better? The rifles are NOWHERE near the quality of the ones from OTHER retailers... I got 2 from MILARM, all matching good shape, 1 from Frontier, all matching good shape & I just ordered another one from weimajack off this board, all matching & in top notch shape!!! Look around dude, SIR may have had the best price when they initially announced the Russian SKS's were on their way, BUT, I would rather pay more and get a NICER RIFLE!!!

Cheers
Jay
P.S. I still have my order in with SIR, but if the rifle is NOT in good shape, I won't be keeping it!
