Russian SKS45 long thread.

Yeah i love marlin, in a non ### homo ###ual way.....;)

Uh huh, that's what they all say.... It's ok I accept you for who you are... as long as you accept me for my differences too. hahahahahahaha. Sorry that was weird.
P.S. I need more wine. who was it who promised me champagne months ago???? I'm still waiting...

Finally got mine from SIR today.

It is worth $200 but for me, I would only use it as a parts gun. I have seven other SKS' - 3 Russians, 2 Yugos and 2 Chinese including a project Russian SKS that is missing parts but in much better shape than this most recent one.

---------------------------------------------------

Here's a detailed description of the SIR SKS.

This is after a closer examination of the gun

Pros:

1. All numbers match except that the number on the stock might have been added at some recent date.

2. The rifling is strong and shows little wear but further evaluation needed after I clean it thoroughly - very dirty bore. After further cleaning, the bore was found to be in very good condition (don't know if it is chromed or not)

3. The wood has a very interesting grain for an SKS but the finish is no where close to my standards. Further inspection indicates that it is laminated - the paint on the stock is so dark that the lamination was not detected at first observation.

4. Metal wear from usage appears to be minimum

5. Tula 1950 Vintage - serial number 2### VV

6. Kit included - sling, parts, plastic oil bottle, etc.

Cons:

1. All the metal has been painted black - poor job (must have been a winter work project)

2. The modification to the magazine was poorly done by drilling a hole in the bottom of the magazine and welding a post inside - original serial number on the magazine was just about all lost but the number was transferred to the side of it using stamping tools - not electric pencil.

3. Refurbished and probably unissued since this

4. The stock seems to have been refurbished more than once - an earlier refurbish stamp is found on the stock and the serial number appears to be very recent but not X'd out. It also has these hairline cracks in the finish usually associated with exposure to extreme changes in temperature. Further checks revealed a laminated stock - could not see it because of the very dark paint/stain. This usually indicates a replacement during refurbish.

------------------------------------------------

I will probably not keep it as I have too many more interesting projects waiting for me to tackle them.

This might be an excellent shooter (not my interest) or for someone who would like to dress it up by removing the paint and replacing it with either parkerize finish or some of the new duracoat finishes and also redoing the stock - being laminated should make for a sharp result.

I will probably lose money here but consider the experience invaluable - intend to keep the price as low as possible.

OK, my SIR/Cabella saga is over.

Frank called me to say that they would not sell the two rifles I ordered for the orginial price of 169.99.

He says the original order was for Type 56 Chinese rifles. They called them "Russian" because they were Siminovs. He says they knew they were made in China, not Russia.

The new shipment is Russian rifles and they cost more.

I was giving them the benfit of the doubt, thinking they were just ignorant. It is now clear they are deceptive. No thanks. Never again.

That really sucks. Sorry to hear that. Very poor business practice.

Sorry - I wasn't paying attention...mods made the world all better again though! ;)

I just stripped and cleaned the '50 Tula from SIR. Very little wear, everything stamped matching except the mag, gas tube and piston are EP'd, and the bore looks fine. I feel I've got a great shooter for $200. IIRC that's what I paid for my Factory 26 in about 1993.

Here's a pic of the early spring-loaded firing pin bolt, disassembled.
