Russian SKS45 long thread.

Thanx Curtton. You're a pretty cool guy.

I had all these pages about the SKS on my computer which I would've looked up again already for reference... if I had my comp. Browsing on a cellphone... not fun. Unless you have an iphone. But anyways, it looks like mine has a little star to the left of the receiver. Tula 55-56 according to your post.
Now... I'm gonna have to get rid of this cosmoline, which by the way, doesn't look as bad as I thought it'd be. Either that, or I could just leave the cosmoline and not fire this thing...

yes, it is a tula 55-56 , you will be the first to post a pic of a non-refurb ... cant wait to see what it looks like .

just wipe off the exterior cosmo and take lots of pics .

Funny thing is... there pretty much wasn't any exterior cosmoline on it. Before I got this thing, I imagined the whole thing would be caked in some axel-grease-like substance. It's not too bad.

I cleaned my sks yesterday following "You Tube" leads from Curtton's sticky (Long live the internet and thank you Currton!). My first time ever, but went OK. Few springs and nuts and bolts left over after I was done, but that always happens to me when I try to fix things and they always seem to work anyway! :D

Much to my surprise, I didn,t find that much cosmoline either, except in hard to reach areas! What's up with that?

Sorry for the crappy pics, but good enough I guess. Now that I think about it, they told me this was supposed to come with a sling as well... I never got one.
Or maybe not...

But she's a beaut ain't she?

Nice job Smartbomb! Isn't that old red finish beautiful? Does anybody know how to clean this finish? I tried water and vinegar.......bad idea! Also, how to take the yellow stuff out of the bayonet and make it shine..

This is gonna sound like a dumb question and I'm gonna look like a total newb for this... But how the hell do you turn the bayonet forwards? I tried just pulling it down, and it doesn't budge, and I always feel really uncomfortable about using force on anything that doesn't budge easily.

You did it right. You pull it down, its spring loaded. Probably caked in cosmo and needs to be cleaned. It very easy to take apart, but just remember the SPRING if your not careful you can send the blade flying across the room. ( Do not ask how I learned that)

I usually try not to move the bayonet too often on my SKS/M44 Carbines, since it's difficult to do without eventually wearing off some of the blue on the muzzle/bayonet mount.

I'm with you when it comes to asking before forcing anything. It kind of reminds me of the day when my my dad started pounding on a Lee Loader when I was having difficulty decapping a a Berdan primed 6.5x55 case. I thought that Swedish, non-corrosive surplus must certainly have been boxer primed, lol!

And while heavybullet is on topic, you might also want to be careful when removing the gas tube and piston, since there's a spring just beneath the rear site that can sometimes shoot out across the room just as dramatically. It usually stays put, but it's good to know just in case.

There ya go. Just pull down where it is circled. That entire piece should move freely (under spring tension of course) without the blade moving at all.

BTW Curtton, LOL I did not even know you had that sticky up, great job.
P.S a cpl them pics look familiar :D

Great looking Tula!

And to the guy who asked about Laminate stocks, only Refurbs would have laminate wood. Original non-refurbs are never laminate stocked.
