Russian SKS45 long thread.

I can't wait for mine. I am getting one of the hand select ones. Do you think it's worth the extra $40? I hope so. Not looking forward to cleaning off the gunk. My norinco was covered in it. Just nasty!

That rifle of smartbomb's looks awesome, I like the color of the wood. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thanks man. Yeah I like the color of the wood too... it's red... like the Soviet flag. lol.

Can't wait to polish this up and make it look really nice. I'm just debating now on if I should take it out to go shooting at all considering what it is.

It's seems good, get the odd shell casing stuck once in awhile but I haven't shot my Russian yet. I put a Tapco Fusion stock on it. It looks super cool. I just need a bipod. I can't wait to compare!

Great looking Tula!

And to the guy who asked about Laminate stocks, only Refurbs would have laminate wood. Original non-refurbs are never laminate stocked.

Not completely true Claven. My 1950 is a refurb with the original birch stock.

I'll get more pics after I do a field strip, clean all the metal parts and oil\buff up the wood.
Haven't had the time to do that yet.

Thats the kewl thing about a SKS, you can strip it down to all its pieces easily and without tools, so you can easily get all the cosmo off. The last one I de- cosmo'd, I took off as much cosmo as I could, then stripped the sks naked, and dunked every little part in boiling water, then did a quick wipe down with CLP.

I'm not too sure of that statement Claven2. I've seen info both ways whether or not the late Tula's came with laminate stocks or not. That's why I wondering if any un-refurbs came out of the Epps shipment with laminates.

yes, i would love to see a non-refurb with a laminated stock .

due to lack of production info , we can never be sure , till we see otherwise .

I am amazed this was not asked by a certain member here who has a cleaning kit fetish :D:D But did you get the cleaning kit, and a nice metal oil bottle??

I got the cleaning kit. I don't think I got a metal oil bottle...
I didn't get the sling either, which I emailed Epps about already.

smartbomb, your carbine maybe one of the original unissued ones.

Check to see if:

All the serial numbers are of the same font with no re stamps or electropencilled numbers (other then the gas cylinder, piston, underside of the rear sight, extractor). The original unissued condition carbines have that deep red shellac finish on the wood with a single set of serial numbers stamped into the butt, unblued crown on the barrel, bare metal on the leading edges of the body cover "fork" (from fitting), two tone body cover, no wear marks on the bottom of the bolt from either the disconnect or the locking shoulder, and were stored with that dark brown stain on the bayonet.

These refurbs have a brighter bayonet, blued muzzle crown, lighter coloured stocks frequently with re stamped numbers in the wood, some with minor stock repairs, a darker finish with signs of some handling and wear under the bluing, among other cues listed in curtton's sticky.

If it is one, don't strip the shellac or "oil" the stock or remove the finish off the bayonet. A refurb would be a suitable plinker, with this one maintained for it's original collector's value.
