Russian SKS45 long thread.

They said it had something to do with the serial number?

Although Russian SKS use an alpha-numeric numbering system, not all letters transliterate and are dropped from the registration as a result. When there are serial numbers of 5 digits or less and no letters, the firearms will automatically go to secondary review to check for number duplications.

Likewise, if a multiple firearm transfer is initiated and one or more firearm falls into the serial number criteria, all the firearms on that transfer reference number will go for review.

These are reviewed by individuals during Mon-Fri office hours - i.e., guns gone to review this weekend will not be approved before Monday at the earliest.

Any non refurbished Soviet SKS in Canada is a rarity. Other then the Norinco/PLA Type 56's, the only other officially imported models were refurbished Soviet SKS's that came out of the Middle East. They were imported by Century in Montreal back in the late 80's, early 90's, if memory serves me right. They were generally matching, very well used with stock repairs and Arabic numbers painted on the butt-stock.

Though there may be a small number of US marked imports that made their way up here, that's it.

As far as rarity goes, a 1949 cruciform bayonet model, or a late Tula with star and arrow on the body cover but no date underneath, are the two least encountered, followed by an Izhevsk manufactured carbine (only produced them for 2 years).

I would say just having a non refurbed carbine is rare enough. With the difficulties experienced in getting CFO approval to pin the magazines, I would guess it will be a while before any more make it into Canada. They will have to be pinned before coming in.

Any firearm being purchased from a dealer that has a similar serial number in the CFC data bank requires a secondary search/investigation from the CFO. Hence the occasional delay. Cyrillic letters are not recognized as part of the serial number for a Soviet/Russian produced firearm.

Note: Some Cyrillic letters are recognized if they transliterate easily to Latin alphabet. "T" "M" etc. come to mind as examples I have seen. I've also seen many cases where "G" was transliterated to Latin "r", Cyrillic "D" as a Latin "A" Cyrillic "P" as Latin "N" etc. Depends on who verifies the firearms in question. There are apparently no written guidelines in this regard.

Just be thankful that our Russian arms are not vandalized with having importer and fully transliterated serials stamped on them as our pals in America have on theirs.

I saw a few nice Norinco Sks's at the Pickering gun show last week for $225 each. D's for more. Maybe I should just pick one up and wait for this saga to come to an end at some point! I figure, I can always get most of my $225 back at the same show!

Nice to see the value of the SKS back up to what I paid for mine, new, back 15 years ago!

Going back to the original shipment... I was wondering if it just a matter of time, or if it's possible that it'll never be in our hands. I ask this because I want to buy some 7.62x39 ammo but I don't want to be stuck with a crate but no rifle.

I'm sure if you bought the ammo and didn't get the rifle that someone on the board would buy the ammo off you.

i just called.
they said that they still have in stock, but refurb only,no new ones...i'm debating whether to pick one up or wait for my frontier order.decisions,decisions...

I guess I'm the last lucky b@#$%^&d. Here's the e-mail I just got from the Epps:
The rifle you are purchasing is indeed a non-refurbished model. In fact, it was the last of the non-refurbs we had in stock!

I did receive your previous E-mail, and have successfully completed the transfer to your PAL. The rifle will ship via Canada Post on Tuesday.

Thank you for the purchase, and Happy Holidays to you!
Thank you again, ellwood epps!

for those fellas that still havent ordered their russian , listen to these guys saying "i should have and could have " , you will be singing the same tune not 15 years but in a couple of years from now.:)

Can somebody give us some extra info on these 1954 Non-rebuilt ones? Are they common? Yours truly is thinking of picking up another one for collection. :dancingbanana:

as mentioned by another member , any non-refurb/unfired SKS45 are a rarity in canada, more so in the US (percentage wise). but in terms of number of manufactured , i heard that the Tulas 53 & 54 are the most produced .

I am saying it right now Curtton! Too late anyway. Called this morning to order another one. All non-refurb's are gone! Oh well....at least I picked one for keeper. The coming Frontier one will be my shooter. Non-refurb. one is too nice to shoot.

i ordered a refurb from ellwood today. They said they sold 15 so far in 2 days. I guess that had alot to do about the unissued items. I bet the rest will go quick. Think they said they had 15 plus 10 more to be pinned left. I just want a shooter anyway and it will add to the refurbd SVT-40 i just pick up.
