Russian SKS45 long thread.

Got mine today (finally). 1954 Tula imported by Bell (from Frontier)

First impressions:

Forced match stock and trigger group. The rest are natural matches.
Nice dark birch stock in very nice condition.
Great bore! Immaculate.
Painted bolt and carrier. :( Even the firing pin is painted (at least the exposed parts)
Everything seams tight.

I'm happy about the condition of the bore and stock.
I don't like all the black paint (I'll probably be changing all that)

I just have to find out how it shoots now.

I'll post some pics later or tomorrow.

I tried my NcStar receiver cover scope mount on it, it fits nice and tight and feels very stable. It isn't stable on my Chinese SKS despite machining it to fit. Range time will be the true test of that scope mount on the Russian though.

It may not be the perfect SKS but it's my SKS. :)

Good on ya Bigbadblair.

The paint comes off the bolt pretty easily. Brake clean does not to bad of a job on cleaning some of it up.

I've been in touch with Scott at SIR/Cabelas and they are requesting that you confirm with them. Before posting updates to this site about these backorders.

See the reply from Scott at SIR/Cabelas below:

I would have to say that is a rumor we have no confirmation of any of that yet, how about posting on gunnutz that they should confirm before posting ok, thanks.

Scott

sweet.

Ok, here it is:
-1950 Tula; asked for an early production year and this is what I've received.
Spring loaded firing pin, so I don't have to make one of Titanium for this rifle.
The bore is not chromed, I believe, have to check.
Everything matches except gas piston, piston tube and guard and stock (I knew about the stock); stock made at Izhevsk in 1954, so I can say I have an Izhevsk rifle ;)
I can't take the barreled action out of the stock yet because someone staked the crossbolt and the nut, so I have to work on it a bit.
The finish is pretty crappy, I have a good project on hand.
All together I'm happy, I will post more pics as work progresses.

I don't want to add too much personal touch but keep it as much original as possible; I will redo the finish, the stock looks laminate.
If you want to keep it original, you need creosote to impregnate the wood like originally done; then, a couple coats of dark shellac and you're done; no BLO, no tung oil.
The punched serial will be a challenge as it was punched through the finish; I may leave the old finish on it and work around it.
Any idea where to find creosote? I heard the farm hardware stores may have it, any one around K-W?
Anyway, except the main components the gun is a mix and match rebuilt; I may be luckier next time and find an all original unissued.

BTW: the bayo was golden but as I have not mentioned it the RP was cleaned almost completely; I would have cleaned it myself anyway.

Nice looking addition. Any idea how you want to put a personal touch into your refurb process?

Cross bolt DOES NOT get removed to take barrel action out of stock! Once the trigger guard and magazine are removed, unfold the bayonet and remove the cleaning rod. Then push barreled action out of the stock. Some can be quite tough to move as the cosmoline has turned damn near into a glue. DO NOT remove or unscrew crossbolt! Your stock is not laminate. Your Izzy stock is bloody rare... may want to reconsider the planned refinish job.

It's NOT a laminate stock, and put the screwdriver down before messing that rifle up - and read the damn SKS sticky before doing something dumb.....
Don't make me call you 'Bubba'.

Got the one I,v been waiting for from Home Hardware, Yorkton, Sask. A 1950 Tula " Again " this time with a Artic Birch stock, all matching, except stock which has been renumbered, and well as gas tube & piston. Sping loaded bolt of couse, bore is excellent, & gold bayo. Shellac is flacking in a few areas, far from perfect , but could be worse. Refurb stamp on bolt cover. Have not had time to strip it down, but hammer shows no sign of penning . All in all , not Too Bad, -- but I believe I like the other /50 , I got from Frontier, Better. --- Soory, Folks, No pictures to share, --- and By the way, Thanks, kwhunter for all the pic,s very good !!! and Hi; to gommee :) !!!!

Congrats BWest. it sounds like you got a decent gun. Are you going to use this one as your shooter?

Well my SKS is a 1951 Tula. The stock has the ###s and a few dings and scratches.

The bolt and bolt cover all match. The gas tube is electro matched. I don't know enough to tell if the bore is chromed or not. It looks shiny inside. It has a semi-gold bayo and the mag is pinned using the IZH method.

Does anyone know what the smaller red/brown pouch thing is?

It seems like a pretty nice unit, but I wonder if I should get a non-matching Bell for a shooter.

---- Yah, Know gommee, ----- I kinda think so, --- its a refurb for sure, But not too bad, was hoping for unissued, But what can I say, ---- right now I,m thinking its a shooter, but I may change my mind again,--- I had so much grief with a Ammo issue for two days, but I can,t comment on that , until its resolved  Just another page in this " Book " we are writing !!!!! ---- but will let you know what happens when the Smoke Clears !!!! :)

The small red pouch is for the oil bottle. The star on the cover with an arrow in it means TULA. Is it an IZH import? maybe order a shooter from Yorkton HH for $200
