Rusty powder

Thanks Bearhunter I will use this idea.

"By the way, laundry soap jugs are excellent containers for bulk powders. Some of them come with a large opening with a removable pour spout. These are the best for my purposes. Easy to fill and can be poured directly from the jug into a powder measure without a funnel."

In other news, there's nothing like the smell of a freshly opened can of powder. That's just about the finest smell in the world, 'cept maybe for pussy.

There's only two things that smell like rotten tuna and one of em's rotten tuna

I've had 2 cans of IMR3031 (different lots), 2 cans of IMR4320 (same lot), 1 can of IMR4895 and 1 can of IMR4198 get the "red dust." All were in one or the other of these styles of metal cans. For what it's worth, I've reloaded and fired every bit of it in various rifles/calibres. YMMV.

Perhaps you always have to go as a pirate with a eye patch to halloween parties.

Ya I'm not going that road dude. 3031 is given to pressure spikes on it's own depending on load and cartridge. Then I'm going to add the volatility of broken down and stick all that in a 5G+ vintage rifle. I'll take a pass..

And do go to Your point, that big square breech block smashing through my frontal cranial lobe does not hold much allure.

Kinda too bad but

Negative
skunk powder. Told him. Showed him, and will not come good in over a week

Found the same as Otto V (Great Handle Otto!)...Red/orange dust in the same above type tin cans in one pound of IMR 7828 of many...15-20 year old powder...Weak if any solvent smell left...Loaded and shot just as the new IMR 7828 powder I have on hand...I also have IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 of same vintage in same tin cans but no orange dust and still smells strong of solvent.

Not sure if it's rust dust from the tin cans or just old decaying powder chemistry that causes the dust...The lack of solvent smell in the dusty powder tells me the dust may be caused by a tin can cap that is not sealed for a very long period of time.
