I have an 870 Police Magnum with the factory +2 extension. Right now will hold six 3" shells in the mag tube with about 1/4" to spare.

If I install a S&J Hardware No-Jam follower, will it take up any extra space at the end of the tube and reduce the shell capacity?

I bought the "hollow" one, instead of the "long" one , just to be sure. It works great and doesn't change the number of shells that I can load into my 870.

Yes. They should not reduce the capasity in 99% of shotguns. The tail oon the back is shorter then other on the market.
So if you are running a gun with 5 or more rounds, the spring coil,s onto the tail and stops the spring from binding when compressed.
The type 3. Which is a more normal cup type follower is ideal for mag tubes with no exstintiOn.
Yes the no jam is machined from delrin/ which is a high quality teflon type plastic.
So no oil or lube is needed.
Ideal for when cold or when sandy.
Being machined not molded. Allows us to put chamfers on the back and front edge that helps with badly made/ cheap guns like rem870 where the quality control. On things like burs on mag tubes and misalined mag ext seems to be a thing of the past.
I don't understand why gun mfg have taken in appon themselfs to find a few $ saveings buy useing cheap followers and springs.
If u can't feed ammo you can't shoot.
Be it a shotgun or a handgun, rifle.
Could you think what would happen if glock or sig provided a cheap mag with there handguns!!

I'm a Mossberg guy and I see a lot of 500/590 owners put this in... but I've never had any jamming ever with my stock follower with all the 500/590's I've owned. Maybe this is after many rounds of wear and tear? So what is the benefit of putting it in a Mossy if you are not experiencing problems?

Don't have an 870 so I'm sure they are totally different.

I like that it's high vis. In some of the action shooting sports, you can't proceed in a stage until you prove your action clear to an RSO, so a high vis one can help you quickly show your magazine follower and empty chamber.

If your's ain't broke you don't need to fix it, but it is only about a $10 upgrade that certainly will not have a negative impact on your mag tube's function.

870 stock plastic followers are like a re-purposed disposable bottlecap.

Mine got chewed up fairly quickly by running the gun hard, and the friction of loading shells is noticeably higher than with an aftermarket follower.

I haven't experienced any problems yet either with my two 590A1s silver/gray plastic followers.

I do have the 870 no jam followers in two of my 870's as a preventative measure though.

On my 8.5 which just barely takes 3 in the tube with a full power spring I use an old original steel follower. I have a number of them and have no qualms about their reliability, and they have no problems with the transition between mag tube and mag extensions. That's where you will get a hang up if it's going to happen

The benefit, if you have 0 problems with you gun, is that it is High vis . but i will tell you if you run you gun in winter and take it from a warm place truck/ house and you are running any lube in you mag tube it will freeze up with the metal follower, and if the molded plastic one becomes hard and if there are any hang ups the plastic will not give.
Delrin that is machined does not change being -50 or +60 it stays in the same state intill get get to the melting point.

The facts are, as much as I love 870,s and i have worked on 1000,s of them. you will have less issues with a Mil spec Mossberg then you will a new 870, the follower, spring, exstractor and the finish on most 870,s are just sub par since the 1990,s .
Todays Mossy 590, is a much better made gun.
That said the 870 is a much more simple gun.
You are likely to have less issue with the spring and follower in a 590 then in an 870, that said the 500,s and maverick are really bad.
As its been said for a $12 part it is well worth buying.
we have sold so many of these, its almost become a standard thing people say, you will see on forums around the world, when people talk aftermarket followers they use the term " no jam follower" which is our trade mark.
we have had our followers used in over 80 different countries from Iceland to south Africa
I know its hard to take advice from someone that it trying to sell something, but it is a very good product and the cost is quite cheap.

Oh yeah, I believe, and know first hand of the product's quality. I just haven't swapped them out in my 590A1s. They seem to run just fine so far.
I like aspects of both the Moss and Rem platforms, so because of that I couldn't outright decide on just one, which is why I don't have just one I guess. Lol!

Well, I should have gotten the hollow "type 3" follower. The "type 2" unit definitely takes up extra space in the tube, about 5/8" worth. I could fit six 3 inch shells in with about 1/4" to spare before, and now the sixth one hangs out about 3/8". So now I'd have to ghost load if I wanted to keep the 6+1 capacity (which I don't want to do). Oh well, live and learn I guess.

Bummer, maybe go with 2 3/4 inch shells or cut the tail off or get one of the green donuts...... :)
So many options.

Cut the spring 4,5 c0ils and it will fit n0 pr0blem

Ok I was wrong. It turns out that the shells I'm trying to feed now are a hair longer that the other ones I tried before. I can't fit six of these ones even with the stock follower. The S&J follower only takes up an extra 1/4" or so and cutting off 4 coils from the spring makes it the same as with the stock one.
