Looking for some advice on grips for my S&W 629 in 44 mag. I got it with aftermarket grips, I think, as there is no S&W logo just a round brassy inlay on both sides. On the very bottom if you look closely it says "presentation grip by Pachmayr". These grips never worked very well after a couple of cylinders the rear bottom frame corner starts to protrude from the grip. It does not come right out but there is a pointy bit in the back and it gets very uncomfortable on my palm. I understand this gun puts out lots of force but this situation is unusable. I removed the grip and looked inside it says FRAME C-J small grip. That does not seem right to me. The 629 is an N frame and this grip indicates its for a J frame and I have not herd of a C frame.
I am interested to know if the grip sizes are the same on all frames on the Smiths. This one actually seems to fit a little loose. When installed carefully and squarely, and you pinch the grip front and back there is some give there, like there is space between the grip frame and the grip. I would expect there not to be. Also what grips people are using on the N frame in 44, and how do you like them. I have a fairly average hand, perhaps slightly larger than average. I am also considering getting original grips straight from S&W. I understand they have wood and rubber versions.
Thanks in advance for you advice. Seve.
