Looking for some advice on grips for my S&W 629 in 44 mag. I got it with aftermarket grips, I think, as there is no S&W logo just a round brassy inlay on both sides. On the very bottom if you look closely it says "presentation grip by Pachmayr". These grips never worked very well after a couple of cylinders the rear bottom frame corner starts to protrude from the grip. It does not come right out but there is a pointy bit in the back and it gets very uncomfortable on my palm. I understand this gun puts out lots of force but this situation is unusable. I removed the grip and looked inside it says FRAME C-J small grip. That does not seem right to me. The 629 is an N frame and this grip indicates its for a J frame and I have not herd of a C frame.

I am interested to know if the grip sizes are the same on all frames on the Smiths. This one actually seems to fit a little loose. When installed carefully and squarely, and you pinch the grip front and back there is some give there, like there is space between the grip frame and the grip. I would expect there not to be. Also what grips people are using on the N frame in 44, and how do you like them. I have a fairly average hand, perhaps slightly larger than average. I am also considering getting original grips straight from S&W. I understand they have wood and rubber versions.

Thanks in advance for you advice. Seve.

You have the wrong grip. Try Hogue rubber grip. I put them on all my revolvers. They are cheap but well build and very confortable to shoot with.

I like the feel of the rubber Hogues, but when shooting they deform a little so the full force is concentrated on the narrow exposed grip frame. I find the wood Hogues a little more comfortable to shoot because they are a little thicker and distribute the force over a wider surface area.

Interestingly a lot of folks I know like the Pachmayr's because the cover the backstrap and and absorb the recoil so maybe you just need to try the proper grip.

I also tried a set of Nills which were beautiful and very comfortable to hold and with 44 special, but because they were smooth and not positioned ideally for me, with magnum loads the gun would freely rotate in my palm and the full force of the recoil was felt on the web of my hand between the thumb and index finger - not comfortable.

Anyway it can be a little tricky to find the right grip for magnum loads. Grips fit people differently so you may want to try a few.

^ This. I'll add that Magnums are going to pound your hand/wrist/arm so it's about the mitigation of tearing flesh (DirtyBarry:p) or pounding bone. I like the Hogue exotic like gdawgs above and have them on all my revolvers...they are wonderful to look at and also the best I've found at pain mitigation.

The grips on both my .44's would move. The wood ones on the 29-10 and the factory rubber ones on the 629. They would kind of rock around the axis of the grip screw. Not really noticeable when just fondling them but became very obvious when shooting them. I ended up shimming both of them with bits of brass shimstock stuffed between the grip and the front and bottom of the frame and that made a big difference in the flesh tearing department. Might have even helped accuracy.

dirtybarry, that is exactly how I feel with mine. the grip seems to rotate around the grip frame. The frame ends up actually poking out the bottom at the back. I wish I could post a picture, your hand would hurt just looking at it. It seems to crowd my fingers at the front as well, my little finger is almost half off the bottom of the grip. Do you guys usually order grips online or do gun shops stock them so you can touch them ? Any places in the GTA. Ontario.

You'll notice the Hogues utilize an under yoke for the grip. There is no center screw to rely on, the grip tolerances are tight and fit well and a screw secures the grip through the butt end.

I order the direct from Hogue in the U.S (wait for our dollar to go back up if you can $). They'll ship right to you NP.

629 is the larger N frame. Up to -4 should be square butt. 5-current is round butt (don't quote me). Not interchangeable.

Got factory wood on my -3. Feel great but after dozen shots kinda hurts.
-10 has rubber hogue grip, very comfy but oh the wood grips looks so much better.
