s&w m&p 15 22

Not your father's 22LR...

Thought I'd post a few pictures of my (actually, my wife's) new Smith & Wesson MP15-22 which has been given an extensive Magpul upgrade. First and foremost, this is a really nice, well-designed .22LR! (much different than the .22LRs I used to shoot back in the day...) I especially like the fact that it's almost entirely polymer (nice for durability and the elements) and completely disassembles for cleaning (unlike the Colt). As others have mentioned, it's ridiculously and insanely light, too (factory specs indicate 5.5lbs, but when everything was modified and calculated I was getting a net weight of closer to 5.0lbs). The only downside is the restricted status, but I digress...

As light as it was, I wanted to make some improvements and so set about making it even lighter yet. I started by stripping the factory BUIS (heavy), A2 pistol grip and standard AR stock. These were replaced with a Magpul MBUS, MIAD (C123 insert) and mil-spec CTR. I was even able to add Magpul rail ladder protectors on the sides, some TDI rubber grips on the bottom and a Magpul RVG vertical grip for basically a net wash with the weight (the only minor gripe I have is that the L-shaped strap on the MIAD doesn't contour on the lower; there's a slight gap at the top that you can only see up close).

With the EOTech XPS2-2 it came in at exactly 5lbs 8.9oz, which is really fantastic considering that all the Magpul items (with the exception of the MBUS) are slightly heavier than the stock parts). Again, the big savings was with stripping the heavy factory BUIS which allowed me to add all the extra components without any weight penalty.

Now that it's finally stopped raining I can't wait to take it out!

Whats the advantage to replacing the stock? The original doesnt seem that heavy / functions pretty well.

Anyways heres mine, only added a red dot and detailed the writing so far :D

Would like to add a 3-4x scope and a foregrip, anyone know good brands of both on a budget? Nothing fancy, but a compact scope would probably look best.

The CTR has a locking latch, it's sealed at the end, has a nicer butt pad - and, well - it just looks cooler. You could go with a Magpul RVG or AFG.

Just ordered mine. only thing i want to add is a flash suppressor to have that M4 look. How and where can i get it done here in vancouver? thanks guys. (im a noob)

Dumb question: Is this just a fun range toy or do you think it has any "tactical" value? Say SHTF and zombies are trying to break down your door, would you grab your 15-22 or your Glock?

it is a fun range toy for sure, or a cheap trainer to a AR platform without having to spend lots of money on .223

for when SHTF, the glocks caliber will have more stopping power, even tho the .22 can still be a lethal cartridge

Will it fit a 556 AR lower ?
I was thinking of a Spike dedicated Upper this might be a cheaper alternative if they fit AR lower.

No it won't, mine arrived yesterday, there are slight dimensional differences. You can use a different AR-15 trigger mech in it, however because the internal dimensions in the lower are somewhat different and it's made of plastic, most of the set match triggers that screw down inside the lower are not an option. The trigger on mine is pretty typical military-grade semi-auto AR-15. Black Dog mags are also not an option, the mag well on the S&W is slightly smaller.

Best guess would be a Timney self-contained match trigger would do the job, but I haven't tried it.

I only bought this thing to #### about with to be honest, it's not going to be better than my AccuracySpeaks upper but hopefully it won't be as much hassle either.

I note there is now a version with an M16A1 style flash hider, cannot see the point myself but for those of you who must have that "military" look.
