A recent thread mentioned relative numbers of Canadian police officers and the global numbers of the S&W M&P pistol on active police duty. Anything that I have seen has been only anecdotal, 80 pistols here...300 officers there...etc., and I cannot prove or disprove such a claim.

How many police officers exist in Canada?
How many peace officers exist in Canada?
How many police forces in Canada use S&W pistols?
How many S&W M&P pistols are on duty in the U.S.? How many globally?

...the M&P is already carried by more police officers in the US and elsewhere than there are police in Canada...

Not sure if your interested in this, but I believe brinks just dropped their 38's for the M&P40. I have spoken to 2 employees who have confirmed this.

836,737 full time sworn officers in the US (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/lawenf.htm)
65,283 officers in Canada (http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/legal05a-eng.htm)

In order to issue pistols to more officers in the US than there are officers in Canada, a manufacturer would need less than a 10% market share.
To clarify (since it was my remark being commented on), I can only find 'definite' sales for 26,053 pistols to agencies in 4 countries excluding Canada, however there are Federal or National sales to at least 3 other countries that I cannot find definite numbers for, additionally there must be dozens of local or city governments that I have not come across. I guess the point is that the statement that the M&P was not widely accepted was basically crap.

Whatever it is, I'd say Glock's still got the lion's share of police contracts in the world.

NAA.

I don't intend to research this, but I'm willing to bet there's a Glock out there for every man, woman and child in Canada (what a great thought), we forget how small our population is compared to other countries.

I've heard the Edmonton Police is going away from the glock (or looking at going away from it). Just heresay though, as even a regular cst. wouldn't really know.

I know one cop in my town that has a mp9, I noticed it when he came to my door one day. Told him I had the same one upstairs said he liked it a lot.
