I found this on Youtube. Kind of makes me wonder now if S&W designed the M&P so the slide drops when a loaded mag is inserted. Funny it doesn't do it everytime. What do you guys think?

There's no indication of a deliberate mechanism to release the slide under those conditions, so I'd say no, its an inadvertent occurance.

I would say no. In the Beretta 92FS the slide catch is operated by a notch in the mag follower , so it locks the slide back when the last rnd is fired . When inserting a full mag the catch will release the slide every time. Now in the case of the M&P does the slide lock back when the last rnd is fired ???? I suspect not since I couldn't see anything connecting the mag follower to the slide catch. Just bcs you can get the slide to release by really slamming on the mag it only shows that the fit isn't that good and/or it's been worn out or the spring loosened thus making it drop on some occasions.
It's not reliable enough to be able to call it a feature of this pistol.

I do this during a load, but I have noticed that if you slam the mag 90 degrees to the barrel it won't send the slide home, if you slam the mag in at a 45 degree sort of glancing blow the slide will release. Saw it on the magpul handgun video

My M&P9 does it 100% of the time. I have every confidence in it with 2 years and 10,000+ rds on the gun. It's gotten to the point where I have to remind myself to rack the slide after a reload, because the slide just seats itself and strips off a round so reliably. I've heard that it was not a design feature, but a result of how these guns are made, Glocks supposedly have this too, but I don't run a Glock.

x2.

2.5 years. Hundreds if not thousands of times at the range and 5 mornings a week.

If I'm not mistaken, the M&Ps are designed to release the slide when a loaded magazine is inserted at a 45 degree angle. Any other angle won't work. I can only surmise that S&W determined that the 45 degree insertion angle is the most "natural" angle to insert a mag?

It's all about the consistency in how you load the magazine. If you're unaware of the insertion angle then you'll probably get inconsistent slide release reactions.

WTF are you talking about?

The Beretta M9/92FS did it almost everytime. Same with my G17, CZ Shadow SP-01 and M&P Pro. Now try to do that with a 1911.

You'd need to be a gorilla to get a 1911 to do that, but I agree there are lots of pistols that do - angle is the key in the M&P, if you're willing to train yourself to use the same angle everytime, until it's sub-conscious, then I guess it's a feature. If you're not, it's an occurence. The M9 and the Glock have the same feature (or occurence) as noted, I don't find it to be worrysome because it doesn't really slow you down (it might speed you up marginally, but I doubt it)

My Gen 4 17 releases the slide when a full magazine is inserted with force almost every time. I just did the IPSC match at the Brant club and it released on every magazine change. You just have to slam the magazine in with the heel of your palm.

this happens on my m&p all the time with little effort on my part. just insert the mag 45 degrees with a bit of firmness. my cz shadow, beretta 92fs do this but i have to really honk it in there.

What do you mean, "Insert the magazine at 45 degrees"?

Actually you're right, that is misleading - obviously the mag only goes in at one angle. When you 'tap' (smash, hammer) the bottom of the mag to enusre that it's seated, if your hand moves upward and forward at a 45 degree angle, the slide will drop (on a full mag and a gun that's seen some rounds in my experience) and load the pistol.

Got it. Thanks.
