S&W M&P - thoughts?

I have three M&P's. The M&P 9, Pro Series CORE 5", and an M&P 22. All are accurate reliable pistols. The older 9's had accuracy issues. The newer ones have a different twist in the barrel that fixed this..../QUOTE]

At what point was did the M&P start manufacturing different twists in the bbl? Curious as to how to identify.

I really liked my M&P 9 when I first got it but the trigger was a bit scratchy. At 25 m I was on target but fairly evenly distributed along the left side. It just didn't shoot as well as some friends guns (cz, h&k). I replaced the trigger with an Apex and it made a world of difference -- super crisp trigger and at 25 m I'm within a 5" or 6" circle on centre with 9/10 shots. Now I love my M&P.

I'm not certain of the exact date. You can easily identify the barrels. The older 1:18 barrels were very fussy about what bullet wieghts they were accurate with. The newer barrels are a 1:10 twist similar to what is in the Glock's and CZ's.

You can identify the barrels by the dimples stamped in the bottom of the barrel (see photo below). No dimples means you have the old 1:18 barrel. One or two dimples means you have the newer 1:10. If you have the older barrel and have accuracy issues, contact Murray Charlton Enterprises. They are the S&W warranty depot in Canada. I sent my M&P 9 to them and they installed the newer barrel for me. They are great to deal with.

I bought the M&P 9 Range Kit for $690 which included 3 mags, Uplula loader, Blade-tech holster and Blade-tech 2 mag holder. Although this was my first pistol, it is way more accurate than I am. The mags are b*tch to get that last round in them as they are not pinned mags but actual 10 round capacity mags so the Uplula loader is a must have.

I can regularly tear paper at 10-15 yards in a 4 inch circle when I concentrate on breath, form trigger squeeze and sight picture. FWIW, I just started shooting in June of this year.

I bought the M&P22 as a practise platform since they are the same size and trigger pull, and cheaper on the ammo too. ;)

Thank you very much for the clear and detailed info. Most appreciated (apparently, I'm good!).

I shoot the M&P 22 for cheap training ( which is actually a Walther and not striker fired) and the M&P45... Got a couple. The M&P rendered my 1911s safequeens. My main shooter is a refurbished ( by S&W) Chicago Police department gun, Factory ammo and reloads, in 5000 rds not a single FTF or FTE. And the trigger ...well, APEX is expensive and they work very well, but the trigger can be brought to great standards with the Burwell trigger job ( can be done at home, takes around 40 minutes and no need for parts... Check out Youtube " Battle Beaver ", good vid on how to do)
You won't be disappointed with a M&P.

+1 for the Burwell job, if you're handy with tools and can dedicate an evening to slow and steady progress.
I kept kicking myself for not getting a Ruger, until I turned down a trade on an SR .45. That's when I finally came to grips with loving my M&P 40 kit.

Wow, glad I started this post - what a lot of really useful info! That barrel dimple things is well worth knowing, as is the trigger tune kit - although having just seen the price of them, the CZ option seems to be worth considering too as the cost would then all pretty much equal out in the end. Hmmm...

Hey Double D :) there's a CZ shadow on the EE for $750, you won't be disappointed .

My advice: If you want a CX4 (NR version) , buy a beretta 92 for handgun (they use the same mags, so you'll have plenty but the beretta mags are $$$$) but if you want a s&w mp9, buy it an get a JR carbine (NR version)that use mp9 mags (mp9 range kit+JR carbine=6 mags).
I have a beretta 92g and a s&w mp9 and even if i love both, i prefer my full metal beretta. Im now looking for a CX4 or a JR carbine for plinking outdoor just because its funny. I've read the Beretta CX4 is far more better than the JR, but i'll get both anyway, because;
- I have the mags laying around
- Non-restricted pistol caliber carbine are fun as hell to shoot
- I love the look of the CX4, but the JR carbine AR look is sweet (and accept most AR-15 parts)
- They cost about the same (1200$)
- 9mm is cheap to shoot
- I don't want to spend 2500$ for a black non-restricted rifle when i can have two nice NR pistol carbine for the same price.

Don't forget... Even if you buy the beretta Cx4 & 92 combo, you' ll get the S&W & JR combo in a few years anyway... So buy the one you prefer!

Hope its help!

i started with a Ruger P89 in 9mm years and years ago.
went up to a Glock 17, never liked the feel of it in my hands, shoots fine, super reliable but just dont like the feel of it.
then the M&P came out and i fell in love with the way they feel in my hand.
picked one up, love the way it shoots.
liked it so much that over the years i seem to keep adding more and more of them to my stable.
myself ive never had a problem with the stock triggers, all mine run them.

just be careful.... you may end up with a bunch of them like me!
the 9mm Range Kit is a gateway drug to the addiction!!!

PERFECT ! Love It ! RJ

The range kit a couple of years ago was around $500-550 which made the gun a superb bargain. Nowadays at around $800, it's completely overpriced simply because of what's come out - sig p320, hk sfp9, walther ppq for example. If i were to buy the m&p again i would either go for the 5" pro, pro core, or performance center versions. The only 4.25 version I'd touch is the vtac only because i like the colour scheme. But personally, i find the trigger shoe design horrible, along with the trigger pull and reset, and s&w to be a bunch of a-holes for refusing to sell the updated trigger housing to individuals.

I have a MP9 Pro with 5in barrel and I love it. I also have a CZ Shadow. I bought the Shadow because everyone kept saying "buy a Shadow". The Shadow is a great gun but I am just as accurate with my mp9 and the mp9 is just as reliable. I keep telling myself that buying the Shadow was a good idea but still prefer my mp9 Pro. Buy the gun that makes you happy, don't buy a gun just because everyone says to buy it.

Following this thread...it's between the M&P9 and Walther PPQ 5" 9mm for my next gun.

Side note: what is up with gun manufacturers and model names? 50 different handguns and a bunch of rifles all called M&P. Ruger has an SR-22 pistol and an SR-22 rifle...what sort of madness is this?

Best advice on this thread. Accuracy is an interesting topic. Shooting from a bench with a pistol rest my CZ's and Sig 226 out shoot my M&P's hands down. Shooting stages in IDPA I can't see an ounce of difference between any of the guns I shoot. I do drive the M&P faster and that is important on short IDPA stages but my scores are about the same. I have the 1 - 10 twist barrel in my PRO ad I think (Spent $130 with shipping) the barrel improves accuracy with the gun.

I should add when we held our first BC Provincials a few years back a Master shooter using my stock FS M&P beat all of us by several minutes. Many of us were "BETTER" armed with a collection of CZ's and 1911's. Seems like there is more at play than the gun....might just be the archer.

To the OP find a gun you like, has decent parts/service availability and meets your budget and go shoot. It won't make much difference what you shoot and it will likely be sometime, with lots of practice before your ability will outshine the pistol you have in your hands. The M&P Range kit is as good as any, will give you good value and loads of fun for years to come, if you like the gun. Beating the boys with their "better" guns is always a joy as well.

Take Care

Bob
