was out at the range this morning practising with my mod 24 nickel. each time i take this thing out i am absolutely staggered by the accuracy. double action at 15 yards and 25 yards was acceptable. single action at 25 yards offhand was devastating. my final three shots i decided to shoot for accuracy. new handload consisting of a speer 240 gr swc and 6.6 gr unique gave a group of .965" offhand. scary thing was, the third shot went off before i had lined it just right and was low as i expected. WOW.

i have written about this revolver before, but i will try and get a pic or two up here.

i highly recommend this model of revolver to anyone who is looking. i've also heard the .45 colts are quite accurate as well.

Did you tried some ``heavy handloads`` in your Mdl 24 ?? You'd probably be in for some very accurate long range shootin !! If long range is your game....

My Mdl 624 will do 3 inches & less any sunny day at 100 yds rested.....Some heavy ``Keith loads`` helping....

Keep us posted on your 44 Spl shootin....

Is your Model 24 one of the recently reintroduced ones, or one of the ones from the 80s?

As far as the .45 Colts go, my understanding is that some of the older ones are more likely to have oversize chamber throats, which of course is not conducive to accuracy. Later Model 25s, starting about the same time as the barrel pin was deleted, have tighter chamber dimensions and are thus usually quite accurate.

mine is recent production. i don't believe i will go any heavier than the old skeeter skelton load, which is good for 950-1000 fps depending on the source. i imagine a 200 gr bullet a 1050 fps would be dynamite too.

i believe my load now of 6.6 gr unique is somewhere around 850 fps

hatman1793,

Here's the Mdl 624 w/ Magna grips. I also have a set of Target grips for it...

A wonderfull balance, long range accuracy & lots of power. But if I want even more power, in spite of a tradeoff in weight, I'll go to that one....

Jeff, Thanks for the kind words. Both have their own merits & favorites of mine. On the other hand they arent that common....

That 4 in Mdl 624 is probably the ``best balanced`` S&W I've owned...

hatman,

Thanks for the kind words. I just try to keep ahead with a lot of reading, internet stuff & experimenting....As a shooter & collector that makes for a lot of stuff....I was recently experimenting with the Mdl 624, trying some of Keith's handloading work in that caliber for long range shootin. In came out succesfull....

I was able to duplicate his ``downloaded for solid head cases`` 44 Spl loading of 17.0grs of 2400 powder and get sub 3 inch groups at 100yds with the 624. I went up there VERY carefully as I've been into reloading for a long time. Quite a satisfying archivement for me as I've ben a fan of Keith since my teen years.....DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THIS LOADING !! I cannot stress this enough.

As for the ``collections``, yes it's true....I could do a little posting showing some of those German Military Pistols.....
