S&W Model 41 or something else in .22LR?

The Smith`s recent quality woes has done much to take the shine off the company`s image

Some will recall the God awful machining done on S&W pieces of scrap iron back in the 80s when they were purchased by that Brazilian company I believe or else that was the British (?) plumbing fixture co?

There was an older chap at the handgun club back in the early 80s who purchased a brand new M66 that spit led like a mad cat the first time at the range with it. The guys got looking and someone had a bore light and by shining light down muzzle while looking with cylinder closed it was shocking how out of time the cylinder chambers were with the bore!!! There were other issues with fit and finish that I cannot recall now.

That would be the Bangor Punta era, which lasted from 1965 to 1984.

Im working on a new ruger mk 4 build to be a fun .22lr i will through up some pictures when done.

I would suggest going to some matches you think you may want to compete in see what people are using and maybe ask to hold a couple for feel. (if the people are nice)

the hi- standard citation whould shoot as well as a s-w 41.
most of the good (Steel) guns will shoot better than you can .
one of the guns I had that would function100% all that time was a older model Hammerlie 215, never had a FTF in 5 yrs.
Can't say that about my Hi standards or S-W 41's

Thanks to all for the suggestions and advice.

I got a Smith and Wesson Model 41 the other day. It came with two magazines, and it is about 4-5 years old and appears to be in great shape. As I noted in the OP, I've usually been more inclined to shoot small bore rifles than my handguns. If this doesn't cause me to make more time for pistol shooting, I don't know what will. I should note parenthetically that I've added to my collection of rifles over the last month, so the competition for time between them and the handgun will be there more than ever. But I'm confident the Model 41 will see a good deal of range time.

Glad to hear it worked out for you! Like most things I've got into over the years, I've learned that you might as well get what you want in the first place. Usually cheaper to buy once than twice, and we don't live forever either.

Sorry I sold by Baretta model 89 very nice shooting gun . Must have put 10k plus rounds through it without issue . Never see these in the for sale forum .

My Hammerli Olympia in 22 short (unbelievably accurate )
Pick up my new to me High Standard Supermatic Trophy (107 Military) tomorrow

These are my two favorites to shoot, I picked up the Ruger (Hunter) and expected to have to redo the trigger etc.. but surprisingly it was good. (Not 41 good but good)

I like the Hunter Model a lot, but this had a pretty good price. May be one day!
I love a good trigger.
The Smith has a 24oz trigger pull.
The Ruger has a 28oz trigger pull.

Did you measure them, I will do that today if I can they seem way lighter to me.. I have an old 1971 41 that feels lighter still.

Yours may be lighter. I`m pretty sure mine read 1.5 pounds. on my friends trigger guage. I just converted it to OZ.
I am not sure when my 41 was made. I should look that up. Can the pull weight be adjusted I wonder.
