S&W MP9mm longevity

Hi guys,
I am at about 3000 rounds through my MP9, no problems yet. Just wondering what would be the lifespan of this pistol. Is there anyone who crossed 10K, 20K or more and how it behaved?
Appreciate the comments,

I have one M&P with well over 10K through it.
The only spring I replaced was the recoil spring and only because I felt it was about time, not due to any functional problem.

My second M&P has close to 2K down the pipe now, and as far as I'm concerned is barely "broken in" (if there is such a thing).

I have a S&W M39 DAO that has close to 20K through it. I replaced the recoil springs in it twice. Not because they were worn out but I changed the ammo I was using in it.

I recently had the pistol re chromed in hard shiny black, like it was when it was original. I will also state I've changed the barrel out with a non prohib length unit from Bits of Pieces, which was IMHO prohibitively expensive but I like the pistol.

The thing is, this pistol has an aluminum/titanium frame with a steel slide.

OK, here's how it works. Semi auto pistols need to be PROPERLY MAINTAINED in an ongoing and proactive manner. If you decide to change ammo and for whatever reason the pressures have changed in a noticeable manner. If this occurs, get a stronger recoil spring. Some pistols, like the CZ Shadow have kits available for them with replacement buffers and different weight springs just for this reason.

The real biggie is lubrication. There are some great synthetic, greaseless lubricants out there and if you're competing, I would likely be using them exclusively in quantity. Seeing as I'm not competing and a bit of a traditionalist I use an off the shelf, waterproof, Lithium based grease from the auto lube section at CT.

I also don't shoot heavy bullets/loads through my pistols. I have a lot of the surplus 9x19 that Canada Ammo had for sale a few years back. It was shipped to my door for about half what I could hand load it for and the brass was reloadable. It wasn't HOT but it was hotter than my handloads and the commercial stuff I was using. All 115 grn fmj. Still, I had a slightly stronger spring for the S&W and CZ. However, this stuff was perfect for the WWII Spanish, German and Canadian 9mms in the safe.

Proper springs and proper lubrication are the key to longevity.

Generally I equate longevity with main components (frame, slide, barrel). Small parts/springs are meant to be replaced.

Thanks for the great input guys! One question about the small parts/springs: do they have a certain shelf life (in rounds) or it would just feel different when they malfunction?

They only feel different when they break or the rounds are to hot/light

My m&p 1 has just over 21k zero issues. Still has original recoil spring too. Has a apex trigger kit for the last 15k rounds. My2.0 is just over 15k since july/aug. Bone stock(just FO front sight)No issues whatsoever with it too. I use my 2.0 for idpa and shoot 2-3k a month at minimum with it. Ill shoot it till it wears out and gladly buy another. I dont baby it either, its been dropped, used as a hammer. Its a tool to use and when it wears out get another.

I have n M&P 9 with 6k rounds + or - with zero problems. Springs are tight and the pistol is flawless with some cleaning and lube every range trip.

My only complaint is my wife shots hand guns better than me and is getting her pal upgraded to a rpal and demanding I transfer her the gun. (Guess it’s time for a new one with an apex)

Wow, that's awesome! What an incredible number of rounds! As for the Apex trigger, I am considering one too. How much time did it take you to re-adjust back to the great trigger action? First, I needed to adjust to the stock SW trigger, wonder if the adjustment back is faster:)

If you have a 2.0 dont bother it smoothes out after 1-2k rounds. Gen 1 its worth it i think. It takes me no time to adjust, i know what each trigger pull is like. Initially it ws maybe 10-20 rounds when i put the kit in.

Ironman0731 is correct. The 2.0 trigger is just a hair heavier than the Apex on a Gen 1. I have the Gen 1 and I find the Apex lighter than I like. ( I normally shoot stock Glocks so you can see why!) I’m not sure how I feel about my M&P yet. Needs more experimenting to see if it’ll replace my Glocks.

And btw, believe Ironman when he tells you his rounds/mth!! He ain’t kidding!

Mine was bought in 2007 - 56+ K (when you get up there, you might miss the odd thousand). What have I changed due to wear? Springs - more often mag springs than recoil springs, which are good for 10K. Striker updated when they changed the design, one slide release assembly, one set of mag followers, the first ones were a little soft and wore to the point that they changed shape a bit. The slide is showing no sign of cracks, which I'm aware is an issue, but shooting lead reloads is easier on the gun than full power defensive ammo, so that probably helps. Apart from wear to the finish from the holster, which isn't that bad, and scratches inside the mag well from changes, it's just been maintained. I've had I think 4 or 5 issues with the gun (FT_), all of which were attributable to the ammunition. Frankly I couldn't ask for a more reliable handgun.

That's great info everybody! I knew it's durable but man, I never expected such crazy number of rounds!!!! Thanks again for all the info provided.
Ironman0731, thanks for the Apex tip. Since my version is 2.0, I will stick with the stock trigger then (Still alive says I need to listen to your advice, so I do :)
