S&W range kit question?

the basis of that would be that if your fundementals are good, you will shoot well with anything, but if they are poor you use the better trigger as training wheels. Anyone can shoot well with a well set up 1911, but if you can shoot well fast with a stock striker fired gun, you can probably shoot well with anything. And this means not moving the sights to compensate for over triggering or anticipating recoil. Some of my best deals on used handguns come with sights that are set high and right, compensating for the above issues.

Brian, this is what I meant by my trigger comment...if you can shoot a poly, striker fire with not the best trigger, you can probably shoot anything. Good training, no high end trigger as crutch.

I agree that the stock trigger is terrible (@least for me), mostly the grit and the hinged trigger. The length, takeup, travel, or lbs didnt bother me.

If I recall correctly, i don't think you had the full apex setup did you?

The apex FSS kit with any trigger is awesome, and if you can try it, please give it a few mags and report back

I'm not sure but I think the M&P I had,had the completion kit and the other one was stock. I just don't think these are great guns for beginners who are shooting targets. Buy a cheap gun so you can buy more ammo makes no sense. So what if you have an extra $500 for ammo, at the end of the month your $500 worth of ammo is gone and your still left with an M&P :)

The M&P's are fine. The Glock crowd will comment negatively and some just don't like the pistol. Fair enough. The hinged trigger acts the same way as a Glock trigger. Once the hinge is set it operates just like the Glock. The gun has had teething problems but then so has the Glock. The latter is now on it's fourth Generation. The M&P has changed the barrel twist rate, the sear block and the FPB since it's inception. The frame and slide remain unchanged. For a LEO pistol it does well and certainly dressed up it does pretty well playing 3 Gun, IDPA and USPSA. The range kit does represent good value and for an entry level pistol is worth buying. The nice thing is the good can be dressed up and be a very nice competition gun.

Take Care

Just to clarify, the use of the gun will just be punching paper to start, the wife and I both wrote our Rpal's together, we are looking to get into a new hobby together and when I suggested handguns she was in :) , she has already decided on a GSG 1911 .22 to start with, and I will get a 9mm. Our local range does have a few events a year,so we will probably try that also, I don't know a lot about the shooting sports or differences between the disciplines, but I am reading up on it. We got to shoot an M&P that a local member has, and we both enjoyed it, that being said I have nothing to compare it to yet, lol. I just thought that the price was right for the range kit, I like the look of it, and thought if I upgrade later to a higher end gun I can pass the M$P on to the wife. Thanks for all the great info

Since you are both new and taking up pistols together, if the wife has picked a 1911/22, maybe consider a 1911/9 for yourself? Look these will be your first pistol purchases, probably not your last. Starting with the same pistols to gain experience on the same platforms in operation and cleaning makes a lot of sense to me. She might feel easier about trying your 9mm from time to time. And a 1911 is a good platform for anyone to start to learn on. I'm old and can say I like to see a hammer on a pistol.

Never considered that option, can you recommend a brand of 1911 9m that would be worth taking a look at in the range of $1000 or under?

Sti Spartan 9mm...get a good used sig1911, you know.....the list is going to get long...visit your local gun store and handle a few...1000$ gets you a nice pistol...

First off, congratulations on the RPAL. Handguns are great fun and very addictive. My advice would be to try the guns before you make a decision. Because one person likes one gun doesn't make it right for you.

I have three M&P's and like them very much. Are the triggers as nice as my 1911's? Of course not, they are a striker fired pistol. If you like the gun can the trigger be improved? You bet. Everything from a do it yourself trigger job to an Apex forward set sear and trigger kit. I have the Apex kit with their aluminum trigger in my M&P 40 Pro. The trigger is now unbelievable.

The M&P is a very reliable and accurate firearm for a reasonable price. Is there more accurate guns with better triggers available? Yes there is, and they may suit you better than the M&P.

Go to your local club. Most shooters will happily let you try their guns to see what you like.
