S&W Victory Takedown Screw

So I recently bought a SW22 Victory which I am totally satisfied with except for the takedown screw. I knew it had a reputation of coming loose during firing, so I stupidly snugged it down so tight with a ratchet wrench that I eventually stripped the screw head.

I've had no luck finding a replacement screw. I tried the one and only Service Centre for Smith in Canada, Gretch Outdoors, and they don't have the required paperwork to import gun parts for the Victory! The international service centre in the states also could not send me the part. Ditto for Brownells and a half dozen site sponsors that I contacted. Apparently Murray Charlton has closed down. If I'd known that parts and service for the Victory are unobtainable in Canada, I probably wouldn't have bought the gun.

So what happens if you need spare parts and warranty work done on your Victory? Am I missing something here? Does anyone have any suggestions? The part number of the screw is 440440000.

Just measured the one on mine.

As far as I can tell it's a 12-28 (Fine Thread) Socket Head Cap Screw 3/8 long (0.375). I only have 12-24 taps to compare but the OD is the same and it's too small for 1/4-28. Thread pitch is definitely 28 tpi

The head might need some material removed from a standard screw - not sure if it is a standard head diameter on the S&W screw.

Take the stripped screw to a Fastenal or Brafasco (if you're in Ontario) and they will match it to something close enough. In fact since you want only one they will probably just give it to you...

Curious since this thread seems to have a couple SW22 owners, does anyone else's gun eject casings extremely violently? When shooting indoors they hit the lane dividers so hard every single case flies off 25 ft in the 11 o'clock direction in front of the firing line. Only pistol I own that does this, and it's annoying to call a cease fire to clean up after myself.

Just checked mine and they are in fact 12-28x3/8".
I'll be ordering a regular socket head cap screw to replace it with.
Low profile socket head cap screws are notoriously a pain.
Do not use stainless screws, they can and likely will seize.
Clean the new screw and the threaded hole in the barrel to remove all contaminants and tighten to 35 in-lbs.
Also, use a number 61 o-ring or some plumbers tape to prevent it from loosening in the future.
If using an o-ring, you can also use a tiny amount of anti seize.
Hope this helps!

Thanks very much sixty9santa. The new screws have nyloc added to the threads and apparently you just need to snug them up and they don't come loose. I've just started using VC-3 which is good for three or four screw removals. I got mine on ebay for $8 US.

The Victory are now being shipped with the nylok patched takedown screws installed. My Victory came with the new screw; however, I don't know if it has corrected the problem because I was also using Vibra-Tite VC-3 to prevent loosening. (Disregard my pm message-error)

Upon closer inspection, it's a Nylock patch.
Anyhow, I'll replace it with a proper 12-28x3/8" socket head cap screw and use either teflon/plumber tape or try some Vibra-Tite VC-3.
