I am putting a scope on my Mossberg 500, which is a gun I use for trap, as well as have bagged squirrel, rabbit, deer, grouse, pheasant, duck, and turkey with. It is my "everything" gun. I will only have the scope on it for maybe 3-4 weeks each year, as my main deer and backup moose gun. Would I be better off drilling and tapping it for a Weaver base, or using a saddle mount? The Weaver base seems like the best idea, but I am afraid installing and removing it each year might lead to wear in the threads. Or is that a stupid thought? As for saddle mounts, any opinions on good or bad or what brand or other works best would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the good idea Wrong Way. However, I already have a scope I want to use, and I like the traditional look of my gun, so I only want optics during big game season.

The saddles sit really high on the receiver so you will need to add a comb raising kit to the gun. I used one of those neoprene bear tooth or bear claw kits. I had it on an 835 with rifled barrel.

Hmmmm....not liking the sound of that. Drilling and tapping will likely be the way to go then. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks VLT, but optics are the way I'm going because I had a slug barrel with irons on it last year. Got my buck, but my vision says I'll be happier with crosshairs now.
