Do you ever get frustrated when you take every anal retentive precaution known to mankind to safeguard your wood stocked toys, only to find a ding, scratch or "safe kiss"?
This isn't the end of the world, but until very recently, my coveted 1991 M77 was 100% perfect. For the life of me, I just don't know how these feakin lines got there!...



She's my "fair weather" warrior, leaving my synthetic stocked rifles for heavier use.

To minimize this kind of damage I store my rifles with the bolts removed....I cobbled some brackets to the inside of the safes to hang the bolts in

Hard to tell but was it rubbing on something while slung? I've got marks before from a knife sheath on my belt rubbing on a slung butt stock

Yup. Why I never buy anything new.

This winter my snowblower kicked sideways on ice and got my car door, left a nice 1.5" long crease. I leave my car dirty so it not as noticeable.

Unfortunately it happens to all of us as gun safes get filled up , and a little tight . As others have mentioned , a silicone gun sock may be your best option for your wood stocked guns .

Took an iron at medium heat for 4 short periods over a wet white cotton wash cloth. It partly lifted them and thankfully no damage to the finish. I may have lifted more/all of the lines but I didn't want to risk damaging the finish. Ruger used a damn good durable finish that's for sure. All good. I will be covering my few special rifles in gunsocks. Just not worth the risk. Yeah, need another locker

The culprit was a Bushnell scope turret cap on my Tikka T1x. I usually store my bolts separately, but I forgot about the risk scopes also pose.

Now that's a great analogy! Most of my field guns have various degrees of honest wear, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

The old M77's were very well made rifles, but like most of the big manufacturers these days, they hit rock bottom with their entry level crap. Ruger still makes good rifles, especially their single shots, and the Hawkeyes aren't too bad.
