I reload 7.62x54 and it makes me wince when I see what the SVT does to the brass. Aside from adjusting the gas system, has anyone else found a way to keep the brass shredding to a minimum?

Someone made a comment in another thread about using your brass in another x54r rifle until it is just on the verge of being junk ex. only having maybe one more firing out of it before its scrapped, and just using that, that way if/when the brass gets mangeld, well it was going out anyway.

I reload for my various Mosins, and my SVT is on the way, im planning on going this route.

X2. Same problem. I hardly shoot my SVT because of that fact. Only 20 rounds down her. I save all the 54R brass for my Mosin.

My SVT is not terribly hard on brass, no big dings, dents or such. The lines in the neck from the fluting have caused me no problems for reloading, as they are extremely shallow. I use medium speed powders (IMR4895, IMR4064) and 150 grain bullets.

What kind of bullet you use? with cannelure? .308 or .311? How's accuracy?
Thx

So far I've used Hornady .308" bullets, either 150 softpoints or 150gr FMJBT, both with cannelure. Accuracy with all ammo (surplus, commercial and reloads) is just fair. I'm going to give some .310 bullets a try one of these days to see if it makes a difference.
