Sask big game draw?

Why does it take a month and a half to get the results. Isn't it done by computer.

You'd think so!! The head honchos of SERM are trying to figure out how to get them and their friends draw for bull elk in Fort alcorn (sp)(Access to information would be darn interesting)

IMO the most corrupt system in Canada.

Slander and abuse thrown around like confetti in previous posts.

You cannot please all the interested parties in managing wildlife, and certainly SERM cannot do as good a job as they would like when they are grossly underfunded by a Sask Party Government.

You are certainly correct when you say they can't keep everyone happy. But in the old days when we submitted out applications handwritten by mail we always had our results by now. With a computer driven system I am not sure why we are held up. I would like the extra month to make holiday plans. I am lucky to have a little freedom to make changes however some people have to book holidays long in advance and cannot make changes.

Underfunded perhaps but with a computer system they are saving man hours so it should help I would think.

You must understand that Sask. is basically communist, so everything is slow and inefficient even the computers, that's how Gov. employment works, top to bottom. We voted in the Sask. Party to change all this and they haven't, worried about voter backlash.
So for now you'll just have to put up with closed offices for 1 1/2hr. lunches, computers that are slower than manual paperwork, wrong amounts billed on your Visa for the Big Game Draw, I could go on!!!!

You must understand that Sask was under years of communist rule (NDP) and even though the Sask Party has been around for a while, it still takes a while to fix what has been broken for years. The screw ups in SERM are still there and they just bury themselves deeper so that no one can touch them. I have never seen how some people can get drawn for certain zones at will and others can put in for the same zones for dozens of years and never see a tag.

That being said, I still do agree with ben hunchak in that the Sask Party is still afraid to do what they really need to do with SERM and the whole process.

SERM is unlikely to change for years to come. With an incestuous staffing system and strong union there is no choice but to hire from within.

It's been the same for years, Grand Devine, Roy Romano, Brad Wall, Lorne Calvert, it don't matter.

The funds available for SERM I feel is what hinders it's efficiency, hell, they were limiting how much the CO's drove around due to budget a few years back.

Also , like others have stated, there is no desire to improve from within. No personal gain, so folks don't care.

I agree it will take years to weed out the dead wood in these provincial unions, but when there is a screw up like this year the deputy minister or some one in management should find out who screwed up and why and act accordingly. There were guys getting dinged on their credit card several times for the same draw and when they contacted serm they were laughed at.Right now every union in the province is about to strike or is striking in an effort to make the Sask, Party look bad in an election year, the late game draw is no doubt another tool in their arsenal.

Whats the hurry? Are you anxious to find out what you "did not" get drawn for? Long ago sometime before Christ, us old guys wrote-up the random draw application forms, mailed it snail-mail, waited three months only to find out that we didn't get selected. Mean while other fellow hunters were selected five years in a row.
Things have improved with pool, priority and computor application systems. Patience is a great virtue for a hunter. Hint, Hint.

Yeah , but.....the ones that ARE successful (never me :) ) might like to plan their holidays. And , considering that the SERM employees ARE civil servents they work for us maybe a little efficency (god forbid) would help.

The applicant(s) fill in the apps. , for these guys (time saver) get billed for it - usually when a client does work for me I lower his bill - and then still SFA

If they can instantly bill me for applying (what a crock) and then instantly bill me when I am drawn without any problem they could at least get it done in a week or two.

It's like the difference in doing a deal here using EMT or money order.

i think its a good system. with our pool statuses and resident only draws its hard to bicth at the oppertunities we have every year.

take a look at some of the western states, some guys can even draw a deer tag near there homes. we can pull a deer tag every 3-4 years and have a chance at a giant. what if you had to front all the money for the tag and when you don't draw the gov refunds it too you.

granted they had some problems with this years draw it been the same every year for the last few years. ill take a tag every few years and wait a bit for the draw to finish than to wait years to pull a tag.

Not arguing with the system, for the most part the priority system , etc. works fine - my point is similar to Sk's ; they have the info in hand the 1st week in June. It can be processed right away (or someone is a bigger computer moron than I am, which is hard to believe) so why sit on it ? The results are not like fine wine - they don't improve with age :)
