So one of my bucket list hunts is to do a prairie waterfowl hunt while I am still able to do so. So last winter, recognizing outfitters were hurting, and after watching a Canada in the Rough and Homegrown hunter episodes showing hunts with Saskatchewan Goose Company, I contacted the owner Tyler Mann. When he called me back, turns out we have a mutual friend (who actually was in one of the episodes) and I booked a hunt for my daughter and me for late September, and paid a substantial deposit.

This was contingent on the border remaining closed as he was fully booked with non resident hunters. No problem. Well the border opened in August and I repeatedly called, emailed and texted him to find out if our hunt was cancelled (not all Americans were vaccinated allowing entry into Canada). Absolutely no response. Nothing.

Subsequent emails, texts and voice mails requesting that he contact me regarding the return of my deposit remain unanswered.

I am going to start small claims proceedings against him to recover my deposit, and wondering if anyone in the Battleford area would be willing to help me out and deliver notice when I get it from the court.

Have to admit, this really pisses me off as after watching a couple of Canadian shows, and trying to help a small Canadian business out in hard times, I am getting nowhere. Brings back bad memories of a slipshod outfitter hunt I went with my father on in northern Quebec for caribou. The company is long out of business, they were neither honest or competent. The caribou hunt was the only outfitter hunt I had ever been on, and this would have been my first outfitter hunt since that experience.

Hoping to do a prairie hunt this fall - but will have to do it as a DIY venture.

I know three different groups now that have gone on hunts with outfitters because they figure they could use a hand. All of them have been disappointed with their hunts. I think we have it pretty good up here, so our expectations are high. But you, you had been robbed.

Maybe you could ask your mutual friend to give him a call?

Yes that has been done going back to September and he isnt returning calls to the mutual friend.

Check your PM's...

My suggestion is get a hold of SCPO (Saskatchewan commission of professional outfitters) and also get ahold of the Better Business Bureau. They've had a substantial amount of claims come through with guys that aren't seeing deposits honored or returned due to Covid.

Complaints filed tonight with province, SPCO, BBB and have also emailed the two television shows requesting that they suspend all TV and YouTube Episodes of the hunts so that no other Canadian hunters get defrauded. Next step is call to RCMP.

He lives about an hour from me unfortunately. I've had dealings with him in the past with him trying to screw me over for equipment he was trying to buy, I can't say I'm surprised by what happened. Have also spoken to other individuals who can echo his shady character, and it seems as though he's stolen equipment from other outfits he's worked for as well.

Best of luck with your fight, you may be trying to get blood from a stone.

If I am reading this correctly under the best circumstances your hunt was going to be bumped if the border opened. Sounds like he wanted his cake and to eat it too. What a gross way to treat people with cash in hand.

The vast majority of outfitters in this area are nothing but a bunch of scumbags. I kept hoping the border would remain closed so they go bankrupt but no such luck. Fortunately more and more landowners are shutting them out each year. Maybe one day the greedy scumbags will be out of business.

if no one can reach the guy maybe an illness or some other tragedy has befallen him?
Is he active on other social media?
Had a customer a few years ago drop off the face of the earth and all attempts to contact him failed.
Odd because I was and still am left holding a 'considerably' valuable piece of his property and it's been almost 10 years now.

TV shows promote whoever gives them a free hunt or $$. Don’t kid yourself, they are all about themselves and the money. You think if they go with a ####ty outfitter, they are gonna bad mouth the guy??

Happened to me too. Had a guy that wanted to buy one of my shotguns a while back. He wanted a F2F deal and offered to send me a deposit by EMT with the balance to be paid in person. Then he disappeared. Never to respond to any further emails and no longer active online. I figured he must have passed away. Held that gun for him for a few years before eventually moving it on to someone else.

No, he is still alive apparently....

So complaints I filed with Saskatchewan government bore a little fruit. The provincial outfitting specialist with Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment that deals with outfitter licensing called me yesterday (unfortunately I was out) and I just talked with him. He called Mann yesterday and Mann answered on the second ring - he gave me the number he called and it is the same one i have been using. I told him that there are no responses when I call or text that number.

He said Mann told him he has tried to contact me but the number doesnt work. Horse#### was my response. He sees who is calling and wont pick up. Apparently Mann spun him a story about how we had a mutual friend, he was from Ontario originally, blah, blah, blah.... I told the official I was going to call Mann as soon as I hung up, yep - he wouldnt answer the phone and I left another message.

I know there isnt much they can do from their end, but it was nice to get an immediate response from Saskatchewan MOE

try calling from another phone, had this a few years ago, the seller after getting paid would never answer my calls from cell or office but borrowed a co workers phone picked up first ring,
