Saskatchewan OTC mule deer archery

come over here to Alberta where we have Landowner tags ,outfitter tags and non resident Canadian tags for mule deer buck...you guys got it pretty good even if they put it all on draw.

And over here in BC we have even more questionable tactics. Open season hunting in the rut with rifles targeting the largest and most productive of the species. Different seasons and primitive tools are used for game management in may jurisdictions and they can work very well. Be happy you have 200" mulies....last time I saw one of those was in the previous century on a taxidermist floor (rifle shot). So please advocate for better management always and you will get the opportunity to see those big boys. Or you will get what we have which is a lot of little guys being eaten by predators two or 4 legged. Now I must rant elsewhere....

Elky...

No offence for rifle hunters but to me archery and black powder is real hunting. I have a rifle that I never use.
You can see in November a lot of road hunting and unsafe shooting and I that is why I stay away from rifle season.

I agree...except the use of long range muzzleloaders and optics that are every bit as accurate as a out of bix factory rifle....

Road hunting ANYWHERE should be illegal....

As well as using an ATV to hunt....they should be restricted to setting up and taking down camp and retrieval of game animals. Too many road warriors out there that " f**k" up a guys hunt by driving up on him or by him when he is posted or calling.

I think the positive you can take from all this is hunting is increasing in popularity.

I think the BIG game draw should be limited to 1 animal....meaning if you put in for 4 species and get drawn for 1 your name is pulled out of the other draws.

Another big problem is out of province hunters hunting with Sask residents...using a Bear tag or Deer tag....and hunting Moose or Elk.

and he drives his truck AND trailer through a cropped field.

A. Road hunting is illegal

B. ATV hunting is illegal

C. Using a bear tag for Moose or elk is illegal

D. Using accurate muzzleloaders that ensure a clean kill vs what??? A POS flintlock that shoots all over the map??

So because you are physically unable other hunters should lose their opportunity?

That's not the point, you said there is nothing stopping people from picking up a bow. I was shooting a bow when arrows were wooden, bows were half wooden, and half of these guys weren't born yet. Recurve users hated compound guys. Everyone hated releases. OTC archery tags are a relatively recent thing, before that archers had to be drawn too. Archery, muzzleloader and rifle all separate draws. Things changed, and they're changing again.

Do you think reducing opportunity is change for the better?

my inline would shoot well up to 150 yards with no wind but I always limit myself to 100. My rifle can shoot 500 yards and that is a big difference. Bowhunting is already very different... 40 yards and that's it. I work hard for my meat.

I see some people here are taking a dim view of rifle hunters. I agree there are a lot of unethical rifle hunters out there but I've seen my share of unethical archery hunters as well.

A lot of rifle hunters, myself included, work very hard for their meat as well. Don't sell us all short just because we hunt with a different tool.

The whole thing is knee jerk reaction to the draw system. The old boys are used to getting drawn every 4 years in Super A and heading out for a mulie buck but w/ a huge population growth and new hunters this doesn't happen anymore and guys are upset. That added w/ Cody Robbins ..Jason Peterson ect.. and other hunters posting/airing 200" mule deer every year I think some people are a bit jealous and think its as easy as going to walmart and buying a bow package.
I don't bow hunt...really have no interest in it at all but any lost hunting privileges aren't a good thing for the community, period. If the science behind things proved that archery hunters were taking too many deer and the herd wasn't sustainable it would be a different story.
Well put.

A. Road hunting is illegal
Nope
B. ATV hunting is illegal
Nope. Not in the northern zones anyway
C. Using a bear tag for Moose or elk is illegal
Ya but I think his point is people poaching moose or elk while bear hunting. Which is a whole other issue.
D. Using accurate muzzleloaders that ensure a clean kill vs what??? A POS flintlock that shoots all over the map??
Maybe not a flintlock but you have to admit, it's a primitive weapon season but muzzleloaders can hardly be considered primitive anymore. With modern bullets, powders and scopes, it's not an 80 yard game anymore. My last animal I killed with a muzzleloader was an antelope at 209 yards. I love hunting with a muzzleloader but there's not much of a handicap with one anymore. I almost think we should be only allowed open sights to take away some of our advantage.

Road hunting itself isn't illegal. Shooting from vehicles is but not roadways. Cant shoot along or across a road buy you can shoot off of one.

Interesting how bowhunters zealously protect their special privilege for an over the counter Mule Deer tag every year. They seem to think that everyone should be on board supporting them.
Where were the bowhunters when the special muzzleloader draw season for Mule deer was cancelled, and everyone rolled into one draw ? As I recall, SBA was notable by the absence of their support.
Some Mule deer bowhunters have publicly stated, in my presence, that they do not fill out hunter surveys, not wanting SERM to have a clear picture of how often they harvest a deer.

It is not so crystal clear to me that I should support their special privilege.

.

I remember them supporting merging the draw for everyone else while at the same time asking that they be exempt from any draw. Those changes were all on the same piece of paper.

don't know how many people read the last Big Game magazine but |Sask Wildlife Federation just announced for next year they'll recommend to the Ministry of Environment that either ### mule deer tags be awarded only through the big game draw. Hopefully the govt won't listen to them but it's unlikely.
I'll make sure not to renew my next year membership and at the same time I'll write a letter to ME.

I think someone is trying to stir the pot. Sask Wildlife Federation will not make any recommendations unless something like this is passed by a resolution ar it’s annul meeting. That will not take place until the new year. Feel free to attend and voice your opinion if it comes up at that time.

Probably you read this fall edition and it states very clear where they aim.

Do you think that a rifle or muzzleloader hunter getting a tag every 5 years or so, while the bow hunter gets 5 tags in the same time period is fair?

I don't archery hunt and have no problem with it.

Do you think your chances in the draw will be any better when those archery hunters enter the draw?

Or will it just make you feel better that more hunters didn't get an opportunity when you don't get drawn.

As far as I am concerned there should be no special seasons based on the choice of tool used. It should all be by draw, season should be set as one set of dates and once drawn what you use is your choice. When season opens it opens for all and when it closes it’s closed to all.
